Recommenders

On common app, should I have two recommenders of the same subject? I have two English, because that is truly my strength.

As long as they can say different things about you, it’s fine. What you don’t want is two letters that say virtually the same thing-- there’s no point in having that second letter.

Doesn’t it depend on the college? Some require one humanities, one STEM (or is that not common app)?

MIT asks for one of each, but of the other 15 schools that my two kids applied to, none of the others did. My comp sci guy had AP physics and Latin, younger son had APUSH and Pre-calc. Both teachers they’d had junior year, though older son had Latin teacher all four years so she knew him particularly well. I had my doubts about using a language teacher, but while he’d gotten good grades in English and History his heart was never in those classes. I remember his last APUSH paper came back, “Only four sources?” Ouch. He’d actually read a lot more, but didn’t bother to quote from any of them so he didn’t put them in the bibliography.
