My school has been hit hard my financial troubles. Many classes and teachers have been cut, we have even been reduced from 8 to 7 periods. I had actually organized a student group to protest this cutting of classes and as a result we now have the option to take an 8th class at 7am in the morning. However, the loophole is that many AP classes are only offered once a day.

Because of this crazy scheduling, I have a conflict where I must choose either AP psychology or Spanish 3. 3 of my friends (who are tied for first in the class) are taking AP psych to get the ranking boost, however I know you need 4 years of Spanish to apply to many schools so i'm thinking of taking the (non-honors) Spanish 3. (honors Spanish is not offered at all). It just doesn't seem fair that I have to choose between 4 years of Spanish and being ranked 1st. Can anyone offer any advice in all this mess?

Keep in mind too that my school is uncompetitive, and it makes me look really bad if i'm 4th at a non-competitive school =(

Oooh only 7 periods! Whatever will you do? Try 6, and 7th twice a week :). I can’t answer your question about rankings, because I’m not aiming for any schools that care about ranking.

I have the same dilemma. Many of the IB courses at my school are singletons and I have had to choose between IB Physics and IB Chemistry. There is also the matter of the discrepancies between the French and Spanish programs a my school–The French program is ridiculously easy because the teacher assigns books by Hugo and has a reputation for NEVER finishing the books, and as a result, has no true grading system in place. It’s easier to get an A in IB French HL2 than it is to get a B in IB Spanish Sl, from what I hear.

However, I have chosen to take IB Physics, to take Spanish, and to ignore the fact that people are ranked higher than I am. I feel that if I am in the top 10%, I will have learned more than the valedictorian who is taking French and taking TA periods in order to boost her GPA rather than taking non-weighted rigorous classes that I have chosen.

I would take AP Psych in school, and then take Spanish online somewhere and transfer the credit to your school, so that you still get Spanish credit.

EDIT: Some schools also allow transferred credit to not count in your GPA, so your rank would not be affected by Spanish :)
