Hello guys and gals, I have a quick question about an aspect of my college application. If I were to take a reduced schedule my senior year, will it look bad on the college application? The traditional route would be to take 6 periods of classes. However, instead of taking 6 classes, I will only be taking 4 classes. These 4 classes will be AP Classes (AP Calc BC, AP Lit, AP Comp Sci, and AP Gov). However, the reasons for my reduced schedule is because I will be taking two community college classes in the fall as well. This means that in total, I will be taking:
AP Calculus BC
AP English Literature and Composition
AP Computer Science Principles
AP American Government and Poltics
General College Chemistry II (second semester of general college chemistry)
Spanish 1B (second semester of spanish)
Because I am taking an alternative route and I am not taking 6 high school classes, will this look bad on my college app or will colleges be fine with me taking 4 high school classes and 2 community college classes?
No, because you DO have six classes and all core subjects covered. It’s ping o vz a super demanding schedule though. I hope one of the dual enrollment classes is in the spring!
No, your plan looks great. Colleges will consider that a very rigorous course load. Be careful to keep your grades up. CC sees a lot of posts each year from seniors who “bit off more than they can chew” and become very concerned about college offers getting rescinded. Get help at the first sign of trouble. Good luck!
Why are you taking second semester Spanish at a CC? Did you take another language in HS?
I am taking second semester Spanish at a CC because I want to actually learn Spanish. The Spanish department at my high school is extremely underfunded and we get almost new, inexperienced teachers every single year. I decided to take all my Spanish classes at the CC after my experience with Spanish 1, in which we covered only 3 chapters (out of 7) of the college Spanish textbook.
Thanks everyone for the response. However, instead of the schedule that I listed, will it look bad if I do not take General College Chemistry 2 (Chemistry 1B at the CC)? I will instead be taking Sociology 1 at the CC. I will still be taking 4 APs and 2 College Classes; the difference is that the second college class is easier than Chem 1B. My concern is that colleges may look down on the fact that I have two independent study periods.
In that case you should switch out of General chemistry and take a science for non majors.
