Regarding Housing

Yeah, if you're going to go for the quad, put down at least one choice in Hill or something.. I tried going all quad and didn't get it.. and luckly I got put in hill, but I have friends who ended up in Stouffer and the high rises and such..

I really liked hill(more than expected), but of course want to be in the quad. I'm doing one residential program in the quad, then for the rest I was planning on #2 quad and #3 hill then so on...If I don't get in the quad, will I still have a good shot at hill even though it's #3? Or will I just miss both?

I just got back from two days at Penn so i'll share something i just learned. Weird things are going down at Dubois, it won't be 99% black next year. I'm not exactly sure what the objective of this all is, but there are incoming suitemates that will have like one black kid per 8 person suite. I met several people going to Dubois next year and they all said that.

hmm. so will dubois be just like the other dorms race-wise? and how far is it from the rest of campus?

does anyone know anything about the STwing residential program??? I am seriously planning to apply there but got second thoughts after reading that kings court is considered the worst dorm? any other opinions on this?

For my overnight stay last week at Penn, I stayed 2 nights in Dubois.

Although I heard that Dubois is actually like 1/3rd non-black, almost everyone I saw there was black. It definitely promotes African American culture, so if you're into a more diverse and neutral atmosphere, Dubois may not be the place for you.

The dorms are pretty ugly, and the inside is not the cleanest or newest. However, it's all up to the tenants to upkeep their room, so the dorm room I stayed in may not be typical.

As far as location, it's just past the highrises, and there are some good places to eat just across the street, such as a pizza place and a 24-hour diner. If you're in engineering, it's not the most convinient place to be, although it won't take you more than 10 minutes to get to the other side of campus.

My advice is to stick with the quad or Hill as a freshman. From my experience there, I would not recommend Dubois, unless you're obessed with African American culture and are into all the wild stuff that happens there.

cool. thanks. ill def. go for the quad now.

i'll be a freshman at penn next year, and i've already decided on the high rises. everyone seems dislike the high rises but i dont exactly know why. even tho there are upperclassmen there, you are still on a freshman floor. plus u get ur own bathroom, a common room, and for lucky doubles, perhaps ur own room. the high rises are recently renovated and therefore pretty clean. but of course how clean depends on how u keep up ur room.

as for quad, i stayed there overnight for the previews, and personally i dont really liek it. the halls are narrow and everything is kind of dingy. i dont like communal bathrooms, but its just another thing to get used to. also, i've heard that because the quad is a low-rise, they get a lot of squirrels and rats (i talked to current students staying at the quad). the best thing about the quad is the social atmosphere, but i figured i can always visit my friends at the quad, and hopefully ppl would be inviting! wink as for studying purposes, the quad is definitely not the place.

i dunno, studying isnt a major factor because i can always just go to the library, but own bathrooms and a chance to get a "single" in a doubles apartment is quite appealing.

anyone else have any input?

I agree with you, Andy. I applied for the high rises too - and I figure I'll make a lot of my friends during extracurricular activities, orientation, and stuff.

Plus, most of the freshmen are bunched together (on, say, the 7th 8th and 9th floors) so it's not like we'll be living in total isolation from the other freshmen.

chosing the right college house is turning out so difficult for me. At first I was planning to apply to KC but then I heard that the population is overly nerdy + it has a major asian population. I personally don't have anything against asians (in fact my best friend is asian) but would rather prefer some college house with diversity. So, I think that my plans to be in the STwing program are over. I believe I'll have Hill as my first choice because of its close distance to seas. I am not a big fan of walking a couple of miles at 7am in the cold, especially because I come from a place where temperature never goes bellow 50.
I've heard two different opinions from the quad. Some say that it is the perfect place to be while others don't find it apealing. I personally would want a place where I can have enough privacy to hit the books when its necessary and an environment where I can socialize with other freshmen. Any suggestions?

I'd certainly say HIll is a good place.. since the rooms are so tiny in hill, everyone hangs out in the common areas.. this means that there's always socialization going on, but when you want the quiet to study, you can just go into your room.. or to one of the two study lounges in the building. It's also right next to engineering.. I love it :-D

I've been flip flopping on housing since I got in 4 months ago. I've convinced myself on like every house.... that said...

I think I want highrises, too. I know about 10 guys going to Penn and they all want the Quad. I don't see whats so appealing about it, besides air conditioning. I'm a very social person, but I enjoy my "quiet time" as much as I enjoy my party and fun time. All kinds of music blasting, kids walking in and out of rooms and whatnot, will disrupt my quiet time.

Even if the highrises are somewhat anti-social, I think I won't have that much of a problem making friends. I'll probably approach every kid I see wearing a shirt of a band I like. Though I'll probably end up with a stalker reputation. ha.

Hill's rooms are REALLY tiny (it was originally built in the 50s as a mens' dorm with all single rooms, and in recent years they've been placing two people in those single rooms), so just keep that in mind. Yet it's close to DRL and Towne, and has its own dining hall.

Quad is very social with a continual party-like atmosphere, the prettiest sector of campus, but can be hard to study/sleep at times because of lots of noise (I live there now)

King's Court has big rooms, more of a quiet/contemplative atmosphere instead of a partying one, close small-knit community, and lots of good lounges and its own dining hall. But, it does have a larger amount of nerdy asians, and its in somewhat of an off-center location (near the bookstore).

I really wouldn't reccomend any of the other houses for freshman, mainly because these are the 3 that have mostly freshman, and when you first get here and are trying to establish a core group of friends, this becomes relevant, but it's up to you

Actually, Hill was bulit as a women's dorm, and I believe as almost all doubles... and there are rooms (that are doubles) in the Quad that are smaller (I was just in one the other day..). In hill I haven't had any problems with a balance quiet vs. not.. we all hang out when we have nothing to do, but when it's time to study, we all go in our rooms. You can shut your door anytime..

I really do have to agree with everyone else though.. highrises as a freshman probably isn't going to be what you're expecting...

I went to Penn previews today. My group went to KCEH, Gregory and Harrison.

KCEH is nice and friendly, and the rooms are big. I could see myself living there. It'll probably be my 4 or 5 choice.

Gregory... it was all dark and hot and sad inside. The 4 rooms together thing is kinda interesting... but it seems highly antisocial. I'm going to stay away from that.

Harrison was awesome. The sample room I went into was awesome, but I imagine us freshies would get a much worse room. I didn't get to take the elevator... but I hear bad things.

I wish I got to see the Quad. I think I am eventually going to put a quad house as my number 1, probably Riepe. After that I'll go highrises, then hill, then KC.

I've joined the Penn's online chat yesterday and an adcom told me that if i want to get into the quad, just put it into my first three choices because the quad rooms have never been left after the third round in the lottery system. So, don't waste the space listing the quad as your 4th, 5th, or 6th choices.

Exactly the same as aaron - I thought of STWing really much as first, but after considering the facilities and things, i turned to Hill instead. Maybe i'll join STWing in later years. But I applied to the Medical Care and Medical Challenge program at Hill for my first choice, having no idea if it's highly selective or not. (The different btw Penn admissions and Penn's res progs is that Penn's res progs don't officially release admission stats. T_T). So I just wish anyone post your impression about the chances of getting into each progs here. (now I can assume that Hill and the Quad should be extremely popular).

How is Ware in the Quad? I was thinking about applying to Women in Tech or Women in Science or Entrepreneurs'. At the moment, I think my list is 1. Ware, 2. Ware, 3. Ware, 4. Hill, and then I don't know. So..yea, how's Ware?

Just a little on the Womenin Science or Tech programs.. the floors are VERY, VERY quiet.. and probably the most anti-social of the Quad.. which is totally cool if that's what you're looking for, but I thought I'd pass on that bit of info (I have friends in the program now so I know what they've told me).

Ware is the largest of the three quad houses. That's where I'm applying to first.

Does Hill tend to fill up ever? Cause I'm thinking that after two rounds, the quad will be gone anyways, so should I put Hill as my #3 instead of one of the quad houses just to make sure I get in? Cause if I dont get into the quad or Hill, any place else will suck.

im doing entrepreneurs in ware, health and fitness in riepe, ware, then hill

thats it
