When are people notified that they are finalists for the Regent Scholarship and are scheduled for an interview?

And also if you are granted an interview you are basically accepted to the school right?

I don't know when the notification comes out, but you're right. If you get an interview that's an indication that you've been accepted (they like to welcome you to the interview with that though, so this is a bit of a spoiler) :)

Feb 14 Valentines day for me...

Same here: the 14th of Feb last year. It means you got in but they won't tell you untill you get there. It was funny: 4 or 5 people all thought they were telling me "You got into Cal" for the first time.

@liquidmetal: At which UC did you get Regents for?

Edit: Oh, for last year.

so you find out Feb 14? Do they email/call? Do all UC's do it on this day?

Back in my day, a lot of the Regent's/Chancellor's scholars opted to live in Clark Kerr, so it became kind of an honors dorm. Actually, honors and football player's dorm, but that's another story. Does that kind of thing happen now, at Clark Kerr or elsewhere?

was there a seperate app for this?

kidchicago:
It varies by year. In the last two years, it's been 2.14 (notification by email), but of course, there aren't any guarantees this year. Don't worry about it at all...lots of great applicants who get into Cal and other excellent schools don't get invited for Regents interviews.

Only Cal and UCLA have an additional process for Regents. The other UCs will simply notify you when you're accepted. Cal has the interview, as you know, and UCLA asks for a recommendation and a one-page (I think) paper on why you'd want to take a specific class (you choose that) that's offered at UCLA.

If I remember correctly, UCLA sent a paper letter around the same time, no email. In any case, DON'T WORRY ABOUT IT. Seriously, it's absolutely not a big deal, especially at Cal (Berkeley Regents is kind of lame, to be honest...it's pretty much housing (which few people take advantage of) and negligible money). No need to be hypercompetitive and worry about whether you get Regents or not.

bigreddawgie:
No, they consider you for Regents based on your UC app.

Well it can be a v. substantial amount of money if you have financial need (particularly if you're OOS or international); but on the whole I'd agree with much of what quirkily had to say.

@kenf: Can't say I see much of that happening this year anyway; we're pretty much spread evenly throughout campus.

sorry, k_twin's right...the regents scholarship covers all your need if you have any, which can potentially be quite a bit.
the main reason why i think berkeley regents isn't that great is because it's not that beneficial compared to regents at other campuses. few people utilize the housing option, so regents is usually just a monetary award for most people. in contrast, at the other ucs, you get priority registration for classes, which is HUGE--it means that you're getting almost all the classes you want at a big school.

Back in my day, there was an acute housing shortage at Berkeley, a lot of freshman couldn't live in the dorms, or had no choice in dorm assignment. So the housing thing was a really big deal. They also gave you special library privileges, access to the stacks, but now the library is open stack anyway. I think they need to figure out other ways to sweeten the deal, it sounds like.

do they calculate your need solely on your parents' income?

quote
[/quote]

Um, "negligible"? It's a full ride if you can't pay for Berkeley.

Then again, you can get the same with an Alumni scholarship, etc.

I'm just perplexed why Berkeley won't give regents scholars priorities in class registration. I mean, come on, how many scholars are on campus? like 800?

But the $$ is sweet, nonetheless

No matter what we can say about how Regents' at Cal compares to Regents' elsewhere, it is still the "highest honor for entering undergraduates" at what most consider to be the foremost UC school and it is quite an honor to recieve (and quite the honor to list on a resume or elsewhere).

hey i dont get one thing - regents scholars have priority registration for classes - is it true?

i dont think I have any priorities.....

Not at Berkeley, no. At some other UCs, yes.

Regents don't get priority registration for Berkeley, as k_twin says, but I heard they do get certain perks like better chance of dorm of their choice (don't know this for a fact, but that's the rumor).

My own experience (anecdotal evidence) would support that conclusion as in I have never met a scholar who didn't get their first choice dorm. I can guess that it stems from the guarantee; since they are guaranteed housing, RSS deals with their assignments first.
