Regent Scholarship/Chancellor's Reception Question

Count,

Why is your daughter leaning towards UCI over UCSB? I think the college atmosphere is vastly superior at UCSB. Much more friendly place with academics that are at least as good in most fields.

I am biased: I have two children there now and both love it. One is studying mathematics and the other biology. Both turned down schools with more “prestige” (UCLA, Cal, etc…) and have never regretted doing so.

Just my two cents. Congrats on the Regents.

Choroidal-

She hasn’t yet decided, but of the two she is currently leaning towards UCI. We do live close to UCI (15-20 miles away), but she probably considers that more of a negative. She is also concerned about UCI being more of a commuter school. But, there are a lot of good things about UCI, including being very strong in her major, English, and having a very nice campus.

I am familiar with UCSB, having attended graduate school there for about a year and a half in the late 1970’s and my daughter has been there for a visit. My daughter is reserved and does not drink, smoke, etc. So, I think she is concerned about whether she would fit in at UCSB. During her visit we were both struck by the amount of alcohol in the liquor store just off campus and the beer truck parked out front. Personally, I’m just not sure she is ready for Isla Vista. I guess it just comes down to where she thinks she will have the best possible college experience.
