Did anyone else get this form that asks you about what your interests are for research? I got it, and I'm really interested, but I don't know what types of research opportunities are available (I need to know this in order to figure out what types of things to write down). All I know is what was given in the packet:

"We are also providing a unique opportunity for you, through a pilot program, to participate in a cutting-edge research project during the first quarter of enrollment. because the number of these research projects is limited, if you are interested in this option, please return the enclosed Regents Scholar Research Interest Form to the Office of Admissions & Relations with Schools, 9500 Gilman Drive, Dept. 0021, La Jolla, CA 92093-0021."

And the form just asks for my "major(s) of interest" and it says "Please describe the types of projects you would like to participate in and the corresponding department will contact you directly with information about available opportunities that match your preferences."

I'm confused about what types of things I'm supposed to put down. For major(s) of interest, do I just put the major(s) I put applied for and want to enroll in, or just majors that I find interesting (and do NOT plan on enrolling in; for example, I'm enrolling in Electrical Engineering, but I also find astronomy and bioengineering interesting; HOWEVER, I do NOT plan on enrolling in astronomy and bioengineering courses to any extent).

Also, what do they mean by "types of projects"? What types of projects are available?

I was part of a focus group that examined this program.

I highly recommend taking advantage of this opportunity. UCSD is a research university, meaning its teachers suck at teaching. The upside is that you have opportunities to participate in research during your undergraduate experience. This pilot program is one new effort being spearheaded in order to get undergraduates involved in research. You should definitely participate and get some research experience and connections.

Where it asks for your "major(s) of interest," just put down what departments/majors you want to do research in. If you're majoring in electrical engineering, it would make most sense to gain research experience in electrical engineering. I would guess that it says "major(s) of interest" instead of "majors" because of people with undeclared majors, and also to allow people with strong interests outside their majors to pursue their interests. If you're fascinated by astronomy enough to want to participate in an astronomy project, then put down astronomy too. But I wouldn't put down a major/department only because you find the subject somewhat interesting.

I don't know what types of projects are available or how you can find out. This program is new, and its details are still being worked out. I don't know how faculty will react to being forced to mentor freshmen.
