Regents Scholarship for OOS Applicants

I was wondering whether out-of-state applicants received Regents Scholarship notifications in February with the California applicants. I have seen conflicting information, some of which suggests that out-of-state/international applicants are only notified if they've actually won the scholarship. Can anyone clear this up? Thanks!

I am also interested to know. I am an OOS, got an invitation for Leadership award application but did not receive any email or letter on Regent scholarship.

They told us today at the interview today that they are considering a few OOS and International ones, but they make up a small percent. They did not say if they were notified beforehand, but they did say that none were invited.

^ Thank you, seems there is hope for OOS applicants also.

Meanwhile, what are the major factors in selection- GPA and SAT/ACT or EC or need-based, or combination of all or random ??

They said the your “specialness” is the most important. What makes you stand out from the rest of Berkeley’s already amazing student body. I think that means mostly essays, ECs, and the interview if you had one. They said that all candidates are already in the top 3% of all applicants. Need factors in how much you get, but not if you get it. The minimum is $2.5k but then they cover up to tuition. Also, they said about 50% of candidates will win.

A question would be if needy non-residents who get Regents’ scholarships will have awards that cover the non-resident tuition (regular need-based financial aid does not).

Also, it isn’t clear from the web site how getting the Regents’ scholarship these days changes the need-based financial aid award – does it replace the expected student loan and work earnings with additional grants, or some other change?

At the presentation they said that it replaces all of your other inhouse aid, loans, and workstudy.

Notifications are until April on the Berkeley website.

Berkeley’s financial aid estimator seems to always assume “student loan and work” of $8,500 per year for needier students (the remainder being grant aid, expected family contribution, and (if applicable) non-resident tuition), so would it be correct to assume that the monetary value would be effectively up to $8,500 per year beyond whatever grant aid one would otherwise have gotten?

To confirm what student2407 said, I just received an email from the scholarship office stating:

"out-of-state applicants to Cal are fully considered for the
Regents’ and Chancellor’s Scholarship (RC).

Instead of an in-person interview, out-of-state RC candidates have what we
call a “file read” where faculty read the out-of-state candidate’s UC
Berkeley admission application.

Out-of-state students will receive Regents’ and Chancellor’s Scholarship
award notification on March 28."

^ Thanks a lot…
Fantastic and very encouraging news for OOS…

Did any OOS applicant receive a Regent Scholarship offer or it will come with the admission letter/email ?
