This whole thing is very confusing. Makes you think they want to keep certain students interested in UCLA so they dont commit to other schools. I have applied to several schools out of state and they have offered me scholarships without emails and phone calls. Very straight forward and easy to understand

agreed. very confusing. sigh .___.
guess ucla is simulating the sense of true life - confusing and mysterious haha

Pretty sure everyone can apply to the alumni association scholarship - I really wish I had done it 5 years ago. Back then, UCLA wasn’t even on the top 7-10 schools on my list. Alumni association students are probably reaching out to you, regents scholars also have another organization which may be helping with outreach. Apply to as many as you can! Even if you don’t get Regents (which is really really tough and quite an honor), it’s very worth while to get the cash from the Alumni Association.

how some ppl get regents is truly a mystery…

Quick question -are both scholarships only for in state students or have any out of state students received invitations as well?

Not sure what the confusion is. The Regents Scholarship and the Alumni Scholarship are 2 different scholarships.

Regents Scholarship
- Administered by the UCLA financial office.
- Students can only apply by invitation.
- About 1000 students are invited, top ~1% or os of applicants.
- Usually emails/letters are sent out to students about end of January and students have about 2 weeks to apply after being invited.

Alumni Scholarship
- Administered by the UCLA Alumni Association.
- Anyone can apply, just go to the web site for info.
- You might get email or phone call to invite you to apply. The Alumni Association have student volunteers trying to promote the scholarships so students know about it.

It is difficult to be selected for both scholarship. Once selected, in addition to money, there are a lot of perks.

^i know the alumni scholarship is only for instate CA residents

GDAWG2011-
My stats are almost exactly like yours, only with a #1 class rank, and 33 ACT. I didn’t get the Regents’ e-mail either, but also just got the Alumni one.

So OP comes back and notices this thread has gone wild …

But yeah my SAT scores are really good (2300, 800x3 for SATIIs) but my GPA is not top 1%.

I’m fairly confident that this invitation to apply for Regents is not based solely on GPA + SAT, I am most definitely not in the top “1.5%” of all applicants (based on GPA/SAT).

Anyway, they can’t solely weight the GPA numerically, as it varies from strength of the school the applicant comes from. Perhaps for the SAT/ACT, but certainly not with the GPA.

That said, I believe they handed out the Regents invitations to applicants as a whole, including essays, EC’s, hardships, etc.

@ApTester: I believe that you’re also right on this, but this system is still puzzling me. I found out that one of my friends received his letter today (VERY Late, since it’s due this Friday) for him to apply for Regent Scholar. He was a little peeved about this.

@BusyMei: The confusion for me is that when my brother applied to UCLA, he received the regent scholar w/o having to apply at all. so would that mean that there are people who are receiving this recognition w/o having to apply? Since I know the valedictorian in my school has a 4.8 UCgpa along with high SAT score / good extracurriculars.

It seems very disorganized (how the letters are being sent out) and such. I didn’t receive any notification at all of the Regent Scholar (but the lady from Alumni Scholarship mentioned that I was a Regent Scholar…but I must have misheard).

Hey,
I got a Regents invitation for Berkeley. I was wondering if you could get one for both schools or if the applications were “mutually exclusive.” I can’t seem to find this information anywhere. All the people in my school got one for UCLA, and I am the only one so far who got it for Berkeley.

Thanks!

You can get them for both schools. (My S got invitations for both this year.) I just think the review process is slightly different for each school, so some kids get an invitation from one school and not the other.

Sorry, one more question, when is the deadline for the Regents scholarship?

For Berkeley? I believe the email said you have until Feb. 23 to RSVP for an interview slot.

I meant for LA, sorry.

LA’s deadline is actually today at 5 pm, sooo theres like five minutes left to submit everything.

This thread is silly. Yes, obviously UCLA telling you that you are in the top 1.5% of their applicants is a good sign.

OK before anyone takes off my head I know UC Riverside is not on the same level of UCLA but I do like the way they handle their regents scholarship. Got acceptance and included was regents scholarship for $5000/year. Simple, clear and easy to understand. No phone calls, no emails, no letters of rec, no interviews…just the money.

@arcadefire1027 – I started this thread before I found the top 1.5% info, and then I posted that here after I learned that. The rest of the thread is just questions about the scholarship. No need to be condescending.
