^Why would you be worried? Only about 1000 of the 61000 applicants receive it.

I would be worried about getting the scholarship… as in if you didn’t get the email the chances that you were invited to apply is probably around 0. But in general it’s nothing to worry about.

The Alumni Scholarship is awarded by the UCLA Alumni Association, with the help of the UCLA Office of Undergraduate Admissions. Hence the title of scholarship winners: UCLA Alumni Scholar

120ish scholarships are awarded annually. You can do the math, but that equates to .2% of the applicant pool for freshman admission to UCLA (120/61,000 this year), or in past years, about 2-3% of admitted students.

Students are evaluated on different criteria. Regents is awarded to the top 1.5% of students based ONLY on SAT and GPA (using some formula I believe, the specifics of which I am unsure); Alumni Scholarships are awarded to 2-3% of students based on a more holistic review of academic and extracurricular factors, as well as up to 3 interviews and a weekend of competition known as State Finals. I have participated in over 60 interviews throughout my life, and the questions asked by the UCLA Alumni Scholarship selection committee were by far the hardest (and I’ve interviewed/worked for some pretty well-known corporations and agencies). Both scholarships are very prestigious, and regularly produce many of UCLA’s top students.

Last year, graduating seniors on the Executive Board of the Alumni Scholars Club went on to attend graduate or medical school at Harvard, Stanford, UCLA and USC. In the past 5 years, Alumni Scholars have been awarded prestigious national and international scholarships such as the Gates-Cambridge, Rhodes, Fulbright and a full-ride to the London School of Economics (which is awarded to only one American student each year). Numerous other Alumni Scholars have won UCLA’s endorsement for Rhodes, Marshall, Truman, etc.; typically only 2-4 students are endorsed for these annually.

So, you be the judge. Is prestige measured by a selectivity rate, or by the quality of students the program produces after they’re done molding them into community leaders? Both the Alumni Scholars Club ([ASC - The Alumni Scholars Club Official Website](<a href=“Contact Support”>Contact Support)) and the Regents Scholar Society ([Regents Scholar Society at UCLA](<a href=“UCLA Regents Scholar Society”>http://www.rssla.org/)) have had much success in propelling UCLA forward through the development of student leaders, and both should be equally respected as such.

For the emails, yes. If you get a phone call…that’s a different story.

Can anyone answer the question of whether **everyone **receives the Alumni scholarship invite? Did you all get it? If you get it, is it at least a good indicator that acceptance is imminent? Or, is it just a form email sent out to everyone (like that email from the UC President)?

@qdawg2011:
Same here! I’m valedictorian with a 4.5 GPA and 2260 SAT and I didn’t get the invitation : ( But two kids from my school who have lower GPAs and SAT scores AND higher income got the invitation. I’m confused. What do they base this selection on? I’m really frustrated because I need a lot of financial help to attend a school like UCLA… sigh.

one word, “outreach”

Are any of you having trouble finding information on courses? I can’t find the course webpage on syllabus for any of the courses I look at.

Nevermind, found it.

They are still doing email/phonecalls of regent scholars right now.

I’m from the valley of LA, and just received a phonecall literally 10 minutes ago. So happy! (:

Oh, just to add. when I was talking to her, the lady from UCLA stated that I can apply to the Regent Scholars, and she gave me the link to the Alumni Scholarship :o
I think the two are affiliated to each other

Interesting. My son (who received both regents and alum emails) just got call encouraging him to apply for alumni scholarship. No mention of regents.

whoops didnt mean apply. i meant im supposedly a regent scholar (she mentioned that i was to me, the lady who told me about the alumni thing) i didnt receive any notification yet of it though o_o

maybe depends on the caller. lol. hope i received it

gpa: 4.57 (UC scale)
Weighted: 4.4
Unweighed:3.95
SAT I: 2210

S got a letter in the mail today about the regents scholarship, basically saying the same thing the email said. So if your regents email was sent to spam, hopefully you will get the letter.

Maybe the notification goes out in waves? S got the regents email and letter, but his GF, who attends the same HS and has almost identical stats (although very different ECs), did not. Can’t believe she would not get it if he got it.

jsungoh, I received a phone call too, but no email yet.

Does it mean that an email is coming? Or is the phone call only for the alumni scholarship?

My phone call only mentioned alum scholarship.

I’ve been constantly checking my spam mail, just in case of those situations (due to me also waiting for 4 different schools’ interviews). I believe it goes in waves (I hope so) by alphabetical last name status. Since my last name starts with the later half of the alphabet.

If notification is sent out in waves, wouldn’t that make it tougher for those who haven’t received it yet since the submission deadline is less than a week away? Or maybe they will give different deadlines??

strange. my brother received it (and didn’t apply for it) o_o (confused)
i really don’t know anymore, so ill just say i dont know. haha. xD

D got the call today as well. Only mentioned alum scholarship. She received the email more than a week ago.

I got a call today also inviting me to apply for the alumni scholarship, but I also received the email and letter for the regent’s scholarship a few days ago.
