Does anybody know how Regents Scholars are selected? I saw on previous threads that emails are sent to potential recipients and they need to fill out a scholarship application. Is that correct? Has anyone been notified for this year?

I was just notified a few hours ago… the email wrote that I was selected for my “outstanding academic record”, so I would guess that it was based purely on GPA (I had a 4.0 UW).

[UCLA Financial Aid Office | CAL GRANTS | LOANS | WORK STUDY | SCHOLARSHIP | PELL GRANTS](http://www.fao.ucla.edu/uclascholarships/regents.html)

I was also invited to apply for the Regents scholars program. I don’t think it’s purely GPA; I have friends with higher UC GPAs than me and they haven’t been invited yet. It may be GPA+SAT/ACT, but based on previous threads, some people with like 2100 and 3.9 made it (though they may have provided false info…), so that may not be it either.

The selection process almost certainly has to be stats-based, though; there’s no way they could pick out the top 1.5% using ECs/essays if they haven’t already read all the applications, and they obviously haven’t read all the applications, since admission notification isn’t until March. So they probably used a combination of test scores and grades (not sure what else) and took the top 1000 people based off of that.

(FYI, my SAT is 2360 and my UC GPA is 4.27.)

When is the last date to be notified? Or are all potential regent scholars notified today?

I have 4.5 or 4.6 UC GPA and 2400 SAT and I didn’t get notified.

I’m a current 1st year who received the Regents scholarship and I still don’t understand how they selected the “top 1.5%” of applicants. I had a 2300 SAT, 4.0UW/4.3ish UC GPA/800x2 SATIIs but there were MANY people I knew that had even better stats than me from my school who did not get selected to apply. I’m guessing there has to be some kind of factor that we don’t really know about, though what that is I’m not sure.

Congrats if you received the invite though I’m pretty sure it’s 99% guarantee of acceptance! Good luck!! The benefits of the scholarship (PRIORITY ENROLLMENT!!!) are SOOOO worth it

^ I don’t mean to criticize you, but what makes you think that it’s a “99% guarantee of acceptance?” I’m curious because I got invited, and this could help ease my college admission anxiety.

Edit: Could the last factor be community service? It’s something easily quantifiable – how many hours you served.

Also, how is this different from Berkeley’s regents scholarship?

If you’re in the “top 1.5%” of the applicant pool it would probably be a rare case where someone would end up being rejected (acceptance rate is greater than 1.5%). However I just said “99%” because it is not COMPLETELY guaranteed. I haven’t heard of anyone who was invited to apply and didn’t get in, but anyone please correct me if I’m wrong.

I’m pretty sure it’s not just community service because that’s not the only category of extracurricular activity and 1000 hours shelving books at the library is not necessarily greater than 100 hours spent creating your own non-profit. I think it’s probably just some subjective aspects of the app that send it over the edge for the regents scholarship. Though maybe it is because I applied for a social science major and not a science major like most people I knew? IDK

Can some experienced regents scholars give us some tips on getting the scholarship once you get the invitation for the regents scholarship?
My DD also got one from UCLA Yesterday.
How to go about it? what are your chance of getting the scholarship ?

I know someone who was invited to apply and didn’t get it.

^ He was referring to getting accepted to UCLA.

If you get invited, apply.

The many perks are well worth it. Just priority enrollment alone is huge. In addition to the merit money, if you have need (based on your EFC), all your need will be covered by scholarships/grants, no loans.

So, if we didn’t get an email, that’s it. No scholarship. Right?

I got emailed the same thing twice? Did anyone get the invite twice?

Yea, I also got the same email twice. Apparently it’s possible to be invited to this thing and still get rejected from UCLA.

Sorry, to clarify I meant if you’re invited to apply you’re probably going to be accepted into UCLA, not the scholarship itself. Sorry for any confusion!! I also know someone who was invited and didn’t get the scholarship.

and priority enrollment is a BIG DEAL! only NCAA athletes, regents, disabled students, and veterans get priority!!

I got the same e-mail three times. Glitch, perhaps?

^^Same. Glitch? Or maybe they’re======>

HINTING our acceptance lol

In all seriousness, though, it doesn’t mean we got in. Which kinda sucks, because someone could spend a lot of time on these applications and maybe even get the scholarship but not get into UCLA.
