Regents Score

In 8th grade I got a 78 on the earth science regents. That was my only bad regents the others are 80-85+. Will that affect my college admissions I am currently in 9th grade with a average of 94-95 and taking all rigorous courses sophomore year and now taking some hard courses. So my question is will 1 78 earth science regrnts score affect my college application in SUNY schools. Btw it is on my transcript

I would think not. If I was a college, I am going to look at how you do in your grades in classes the most…which is in your GPA. I am also going to look at how you are doing in the tougher classes you are taking junior year. If you are doing well, i am not going to care about an 8th grade test. I care how you will do in college and your GPA/SAT will tell me more about that.

It might depend on which SUNY and what major. You could try studying hard and retaking that Regents as well if you are worried.

If your others are in the 80’s, a 78 isn’t far from the rest really though.

Best to start looking at what the colleges say (and the basic info covered in the college guidees- eg. Fiske Guide.) Middle school isn’t part of this. If it shows on your hs transcript, they can ignore it. After all, it represents 8th grade learning levels. Even if you hope for a major based on that, much more matters than an 8th grade test.

Would it still matter a lot because most of my classmates got high 90s while some classmates and me got 75+

Would colleges even look at regents scores and does is matter if you get a advanced regents diploma or just a normal one

No, it’s really fine. Don’t worry.

Colleges won’t know whether a student will get an advanced regents diploma when they are making admissions decisions. Students receive the sticker denoting advanced regents when they get their diplomas in June at graduation, more than a month after they have made their college choices.

It’s unlikely that one grade on one exam will make an impact on college admissions. If your other grades in classes and other regents exams are higher, then it will put the 8th grade exam into context.

If it’s going to bother you and you want to try to change it, go ahead and retake it. Otherwise, it is what it is and you will need to just remind yourself that it’s not a big deal and move on.

Advanced vs Regular is an absolute non issue-- for SUNY or anyone else.

There are some majors at SUNY schools that require a particular minimum math or history Regents grade-- check the colleges you’re applying to.

Beyond that, the only difference they make is that some schools choose to use them in lieu of a final exam-- so that Regents grade can bring down the grade in the course it’s attached to. Since the OP is talking about 8th grade, that’s water under the bridge; not sure what exam @brandon16 is referring to.

It’s not really an issue.

At some CC’s, regents scores can serve as placement exams, but Earth Science is not usually one of them. My S17, for instance, is able to take a higher level of history class because he scored above an 85 in US History, but that didn’t impact his admission status.

In addition, as @bjkmom says, some majors require a minimum regents score, but again, ES is not usually one of those. However, my S14 was not able to get directly into a major he was interested in because he didn’t have a high enough score on one of the math regents.
