I'm going to be a freshman next year as a biology major and taking pre-med. Right now I know I'm going to take intro to molecular and cellular biology and an introductory chem class, but I know I should also take a math class. I took AP Calculus BC last year and I'm pretty sure I got a 4 or 5 on the test.

I don't know if I should take Calc 3, Statistics, or retake Calc 2 next year. Any ideas?

Also, anyone know any gen-ed classes at UIUC that are relatively easy? I don't want to ruin my GPA over meaningless classes.

Retake Calc 2 for the easy A (unless you want to major in math. then I would go straight into Calc 3 if I were you). My HS only offered AB so I took that, got a 5, then took Calc 1 first semester for an easy A (which it was) because I didn’t think I’d want to major in math. But of course now I want to major in math and feel like I’m a little behind, except I’m taking multivar now over the summer to not fall so far behind.

But anyways. Retake for the easy A. Starts off your first semester with a good confidence builder.

Quick note of caution: I believe from what I’ve heard, that BC might not go into series as much as Calc 2 does in college, but I’m not sure since I never had BC - just from what my friends have told me.

I took Calc AB and BC in high school. Calc BC definitely did NOT cover series to the depth required by Calc II at my undergrad.

^ BC does cover series in great depth, it’s more than likely that your teacher did not sufficiently cover it. A LOT of teachers skip or skim over the series section because they can’t fit it into their schedule, maintaining the mentality that it will not limit their students from attaining 5’s - this practice is VERY common.

sxephil, it’s always wise, though not necessary, to retake your AP classes for (hopefully) an easy GPA buffer. I will say, however, that if you feel your score is a toss-up between a 4 or 5 (meaning you’re not confident enough that you know for sure it is a 5), I would personally retake it to ensure I have the material down. 43% of students who take the BC exam attain a 5 for their BC score, and 57% of the same students attain a 5 for their AB sub-score. Every other student essentially gets a 5. Just something to think about.

D. said that Stats was much more useful than calc. There are a lot of procedures in Med. Research labs that are based on Stats and class has helped her to understand them better. She has not been using Calc for anything.

Yeah, I have to agree stats is superior to calc in applicability in most labs and projects that you are likely to be doing in medical school. I’m actually considering taking another stats class this summer to make life easier for myself and my lab.

Acceptd, can you explain: "Lol. 10char " - it might be missleading. I did not understand what you meant, I do not think anybody did.
