I was unclear whether a parent can be in the upcoming registration session with the student and the advisor for Fall classes at UIUC. Son would be a freshman in the Fall. Is this prohibited? If so, Why?

The summer registration session is an all day session, much of which involves presentations on all things about the university (security, dorms, bus system, classes and classrooms, financial aid, etc.) Parents are invited and can attend most of the sessions. In the afternoon, the students go for some separate sessions to which parents are not invited (some student meets, get ID card) and the parents can actually go to some sessions to which the students are not invited (because they are elsewhere), and then the student goes to a meeting with his assigned counselor and does course registration after that meeting.

The parent is not prohibited from attending the counselor session but the parent is not encouraged to attend – it is considered one of those first steps in college that the student should be taking on his own. The actual registration for classes can be attended by anyone because that is just the student in a room with computers trying to find classes that are open.

Sorry, but that’s very wrong (please, no offense).

I’m an I-STAR here at the University (which are the students in the orange polos who’ll be assisting every incoming freshman this summer) and the parents ARE NOT allowed in the advising session or the registration process. Due to FERPA (Family Education Rights and Privacy Act) everything academic is restricted to the student only, which means the parents are only allowed to know what the student tells them. Also, parents tend to get in the way of the student/Advisor relationship building process, or so we’ve been told.

While students meet with their advisors and register for classes, the parents will have separate programs going on so they don’t get too bored.

The parent can also go with the student to get the I-Card, as it’s just in the bookstore. Any questions, message me.

Just for the record, nobody objected when my mom went with me to register. I don’t think a bunch of helpful young college students will be THAT thorough in enforcing (often silly) regulations like the FERPA.

I think it’s wrong to assume that a parent sitting in on registration will be breathing down his or her student’s neck, “holding the card”, if you will.

They may simply be curious to what is going on. The son or daughter has the right to say no, and if he or she doesn’t care, who cares if the mom or dad shows?

Most colleges do course selection on line. UI is the first one I know for in person meet with adviser for course selection. Well, it’s good tom have an adviser beside but does the adviser know your student well? Does placement test reflect the abilities of the students.

If the student is under 18, will parent allow to be there? Will student allow to change their course before school start?

We are out of state, have to fly and spend two nights in hotel for the event. Costs a lot, really, nothing is cheap, not to say the tuition. I hope UI will consider let OOS or even IS do on-line course selection in the future.

For Engineering students, on-line advising is not available for OOS, only for international.

If it’ll be a hassle to get to the school, depending on your College and major you can request to do over the phone advising & they will release the hold allowing you to register. I think there’s some confusion. Registration is an electronic process, done through the Self-Service website. I believe that Engineering is one of the only colleges that doesn’t allow OOS or IS students to have this option because of the strict schedule that all there students have to follow.
