Are the parents able to join the students during their one on one advising appointment and course registration? On the program schedule it does not show that as one of the highlighted portions that students and guests do together. I’d certainly want to be there for that. That is the main reason that I, an incoming freshman’s parent, want to attend.
Nope, parents can’t participate.
Family has one “track” and students another “track” during Preview. Sometimes they match up, sometimes they don’t. Advising and course registrations are two that don’t.
Now, we did get to discuss course selection with our students, before advising, and again after advising (and before they selected courses), but this is really up to the student to handle.
Don’t forget, they also get a chance to go through add/drop during the first week of school, so it’s possible to make changes after preview.
@Gator88NE Thanks for the info.
I’m really debating going at this point. He’s signed up without family now. I was going to add myself later. Is there anything that enriching for a parent? If he is going to be doing the important stuff on his own, what is there for me? I get it for students, but two days seems like a long time to sit around for a parent.
@Gator88NE (or anyone with an opinion) What are your thoughts about the family portion of preview?
As a parent, it really is optional. You do get info on student aid, campus safety, different majors, tour campus/Gainesville, etc. However, Preview is really for the student. I think having us around help relieve some anxiety for the kids, but I’m sure they would have been fine on their own.
To be honest, one of the nice things about attending Preview was meeting some of the parents (including ones from this forum).
