Regular admission after deferral?

I applied to Brown ED, and so did a lot of other people from my school. I know that Brown doesn’t take more than a few students from any school, so at this point I’m expecting/hoping to get deferred (as opposed to flat-out rejected). But a lot of my classmates will be applying regular too, so that’s an even bigger pool to compete in.

My first question is, if you’re deferred, do admissions officers realize or keep in mind during the regular rounds that you applied early (and therefore Brown is probably still your first choice) while they’re reviewing your app? Since you’re more likely to go, does that give you an upper hand over those who are simply applying regular?

My second question is, how common is it for those who are deferred to be admitted regular? First semester grades (the mid-year report) have to be sent then, right? If I show a lot of improvement, would that make a big difference? And if I earn any leadership positions/win any prizes in the interim, can I send them a letter saying so?–basically the stuff that waitlisted people do.

Thanks!

It happens regularly.(so to speak). I know several candidates that were deferred early, then accepted in the april round...or even waitlisted, then accepted from the waitlist. Several of these were legacies. I believe that Brown, especially, can defer applications of students that they deem to have a higher likelihood of attending, and extending more early admits to lock in students that they fear might end up attending somewhere other after the regular round.

I can't give you any statistics, but one of my best friends here was deferred early and got in regular, and one of my other best friends was waitlisted regular and got in over the summer. So, yeah... it happens.

Whoa got in over the summer? I never knew that could happen lol. Nice nice.

That's terrible.
I would probably just enroll someplace else to avoid all that stress.
