Regular Decision 2020

I’ve seen banjo guy’s posts on three different sites, so maybe he is too busy dodging moderators to circle back.

What was banjo guy’s name?

Some good advice from a UVa student.

let’s say I handed in all my financial aid documents by March 6, when would I be able to get my package info?

I’m sorry, I don’t think anyone here can predict how quickly SFS can work on your file.

Son got his admission letter/packet in the mail today. Just FYI if anyone else was looking for theirs.

same

@rojomargarita I called them today asking about some things I still needed to submit and they said that awards are posted on Tuesdays. So that’s like the day they always update our portals I guess…

@bluepaint1 thank you!!

Has anyone heard if they were selected as an Echols Scholar?

Scholars emails were sent the day after the decision release, @scarlettsweb13.

The Good News

Your high SAT/ACT score proves your academic abilities and intellectual aptitude. While it’s possible to have a high GPA without being super smart (since some schools inflate GPAs), it’s almost impossible to get a high SAT/ACT score if you don’t have significant intellectual ability. Colleges know this.

Do they?

what would be the best cheapest way to get from new york to uva without driving a car?

I am a big fan of Amtrak for students. It drops you off on W. Main St. a couple miles from the first year dorms. You can take the free trolley from there, a cab, or walk a few blocks to pick up a UVa bus near the Medical Center. The key is to make reservations early. The prices go up as more tickets are sold on a particular train. Therefore, the prices will often vary by time of day and demand. At a minimum you need to buy tickets about 15 days in advance to get the main discounts. They allow you to reschedule without penalty. Thanksgiving sells out months in advance. It is worth having a AAA membership to get 10% discounts.

My son took Amtrak regularly along the northeast corridor to Cville. Some of the runs involve a bus from Cville to DC Union Station, and then a train from there. Try to avoid these routes when practical. Once, they ran out of the supposedly “reserved” seats on the Amtrak bus. The bus was often late in getting to DC, particularly on Friday evenings. Fortunately, there are a million trains leaving from DC to points north, so he could pick up the next train.

The trains now have wireless, so you can also get some things done while traveling, vs. sitting in traffic.

If you want to drive from the NY metro area to Cville, I suggest taking I78 to I81 to I64. There is much less traffic and stress, and no tolls. The tolls from NYC to DC via the NJ Turnpike and the I95 corridor can be a killer, and it is almost impossible to avoid the DC Beltway going that route, which is not entertaining.

How many Hoos are wearing orange for the Orange?

@Charliesch thank you so much!!! I was looking into Amtrak and the round trip would be ~275 which is too much for me so I think I’ll take a bus. The Amtrak schedules don’t really coincide with the times I need to be in campus so I’d have to rule it out but I am using Amtrak to travel to a different college. Thanks again and I’ll definitely remember the driving tips!

I heard financial aid packages will be posted on Tuesday, can anyone confirm that?

That must be for a last minute Amtrak ticket. Usually the tickets are much more reasonable. Right now service is suspended on Amtrak between Philadelphia and Wilimington because someone left a backhoe on the tracks, which caused a derailment. It apparently was not even a road crossing.

@brendauo101 Their twitter said it earlier today and I called last week and they said they always update on Tuesdays

I was accepted Regular Decision to UVA and it is currently one of my top choices. I very much want to major in business but as I understand the McIntire school is very difficult to get into. I know it may be difficult because high school success does not always translate to college success, but I was wondering if anyone with knowledge of the McIntire’s admission process could give me advice/chance of being accepted to the business school. Thanks!
-SAT(2170): Reading(670), Writing(730), Math(770).

-wGPA-4.4, uwGPA~3.85 (not exactly sure on uwGPA, my school doesn’t calculate it)
