Regular Decision 2020

This year is different, actually, since most of NoVA got an entire week off of school at the exact time midyears were due and thus some semester ends were pushed back. But I still think UVA will be able to release this week.

A lot of people I’ve heard who’ve been deferred from UVA before said they were either wait-listed or denied and I’ve heard of very few acceptances. For those who are deferred, are their chances still the same as an RD applicant?

Agree. Kids who go RD and apply to competitive schools usually don’t have issues with mid-terms. Usually they’re in line with the rest of their records. For UVA, I’m sure it’s just a formality to look them over. I think the leap year made more of an impact on release date. I looked to see if Good Friday is a holiday and it is not, so I’d be thinking Friday, March 25, 5 p.m. However, purely speculation on my part.

Mid-year reports are not a formality. I can’t tell you how many decisions have changed because of them. Senior year matters, folks!

This gives me ( some ) hope. My daughter had excellent midterms

That actually gives me some hope for my deferral since my GPA went up from the first semester

ugh the wait is killing me. I have unweighted 4.0 GPA and 34 ACT and so far all I’ve heard is rejection (Northwestern, Vanderbilt) deferral (UVA) and waitlists (WashU, Tulane)
starting to feel pretty beat up, hopefully this news lifts my spirits

@parandee Don’t worry, there’s still more decisions to be released! And WashU and Tulane are known for waitlisting lots of qualified applicants.

@parandee Do you live in VA? I’m guessing you don’t, but I’m just curious.

@satwreckerZ2 no i don’t. wish I had that advantage!

Glad to hear that mid-years help! I’m hoping mine will be the thing that pushes me into the acceptance pile.

Dean J posted a pic of her doc on twitter and said “can’t wait for Friday”. Hopefully that means the decisions come out of Friday!

It may be twofold. Decisions/basketball. Either way…a good way to end the week!

I hope that means the decisions are released Friday but it could also just mean they are looking forward to the weekend…hopefully tomorrow we will get an official date. The Dean said they would let us know…I don’t think that means having to decipher a cryptic Tweet.

How exactly important MIDYEAR reports are for regular decision applicants? My Gpa did not drop out dramatically but it did drop a little compare to junior year. Would this affect the admission chance? Also, my quarter grades were ok but my midterm grades were not satisfied. Would that affect the chances?

@beaglee105 they evaluate the grades that get reported to them - if your transcript reports both your quarter and first semester grades, they will consider both.

As far as a slight drop - the admissions office likes to see an increase over time. I would imagine that plateauing/slightly dropping doesn’t improve your chances. On the bright side, it probably tells the admissions office that your grades are holding steady more or less despite any senioritis.

At this point, put it out of your mind. You’ll get the real answer soon.

Oh my goodness, I’m sorry if it wasn’t obvious. The Friday picture was about basketball! It was a picture of Jack with a plush cardinal. We play Iowa State on Friday night and their mascot is Cy the Cardinal.

@beaglee105, you need to stop thinking about GPA and instead think about courses and grades. There are students at your school with identical GPAs and vastly different coursework.

Dean J, for those who are deferred, are their chances of getting in lower than regular RD applicants? A lot people have told me that most get wait-listed or denied. Sorry if this question has already been asked, I just never have seen an answer.

The Twitter picture was awesome! I love the idea of having a stuffed animal for each opposing team’s mascot.

I tanked one of the five ap classes I’m taking this semester…hopefully that doesn’t pull me out of the running even though the other 4 aps were good
