I got rejected from my dream school and now im a bit worried about what ill do next. I got accepted into UW tacoma and bothell but they do not offer my major which is biochemistry. And bothell is farther away than I thought.
So should I go to CC first then transfer? If i got a specialized AA (for example lets say psychology) can I only get into a degree within that category? or should I go for a general AA? something worth mentioning is that my FAFSA can pay for my tuition at a CC
And what if I went to UW tacoma for 2 years and tried to transfer into UW seattle junior year? I heard it was hard to do that so im not sure if I want to go that route. Any opinions would be helpful
I can’t answer your specific questions, but I can say that if you live near Tacoma/Federal Way then I agree that the UW Bothell commute would be horrible. I did see a 2011 College Confidential thread that said that community college transfers were prioritized over UW Tacoma. I saw that there is some cross-registration allowed. I’d go talk to a UW Tacoma counselor right away if possible about your options. Luckily you have some time, as I believe biochem majors take chemistry and/or biology in their first year. https://www.washington.edu/uaa/advising/academic-planning/choosing-courses/cross-campus-registration/
What is your goal that requires a degree in biochemistry rather than a degree in chem or bio with emphasis in biochem courses? Sit down with the course catalogues for all three of these institutions, and make formal comparisons of the courses requirement for a biochem degree at UW and what you can put together somewhere else.
As for transferring into UW, check first for formal articulation agreements between UW and the CCs that are convenient for you. Is there an articulation agreement in effect for the major you want? Is there a general articulation agreement that would allow you to cover all of your gen eds at the CC and then just take courses in your major after transfer?
honestly im somewhat undecided. I was thinking of chemistry too but I wanted to do forensic science or something medical, I was considering going to UW tacoma for bio-medicine as well.
For those, a bio or chem major would be perfectly fine. You just need to get through your undergraduate years with good enough grades so that you can get into the correct grad program. It’s OK to be sad about UW Seattle, but you do have other options that could work well for you.
UW Tacoma has a biomedical sciences degree that sounds like it’s pretty close to what you want - it blends biology and chemistry with a focus on applications to health. UW Bothell has biology and chemistry; you could major in one and minor in the other, or double-major.
Have you applied to any of the other Washington publics - WSU, EWU, CWU, WWU?
UW-Seattle doesn’t seem to do automatic admission to WA community college graduates anymore - probably because the university is nearing capacity and is already competitive enough for first-time freshmen. It’s still possible to transfer there from a community college, though. It’s also possible to transfer from UW-Tacoma or Bothell to the Seattle campus.
UW-Tacoma and UW-Bothell do automatic transfer admission to graduates of WA community colleges.
Im worried about finding a job after, people say that there are more opportunitys at uw seattle than the other two. And i dont think I have the funds to attend any university at the moment. I didnt apply to the other schools because my parents are very strict and im not allowed to to live at a dorm, I have to live at home.
If you know your major - and even if you don’t - it relly is OK to contact the career center at each campus, and ask about where their graduates are finding work. That might help you choose between the places you have been admitted.
Lots of students need to commute from home (mine did for the first two years), but that doesn’t necesarily mean they never do leave home. If you want to move away when you finish college, you will be able to find a way to do that.
Im in the same boat, but it is important to note that even if you graduate from UWT or UWB, your degree would still say University of Washington on it and that holds a lot of weight. If you are planning on transferring to main campus after 2 years it might be more beneficial to go to UWT or UWB because you can take 15 credits a year at main if you are attending another UW school. You also have access to their clubs, programs, and libraries. Because of this, I definitely want to go to a UW school and hopefully transfer.
true but after some research I want to do chem and the only school within reasonable distance is uw, bothell is over a 2 hour drive for me… What do you plan to do? im pretty lost
