Rejected to all and applying again for Fall 2020

I got waitlisted/rejected to all UC’s in Fall 2019 and am planning on staying another year to transfer/apply for Fall 2020. Would the process be the same if I am applying a 2nd time or do I have to do something different since I am applying again?
Thank you.

@Gumbymom may be able to answer your question.

What is different about your application for 2020? The things those colleges consider to be the most important (GPA, test scores) probably haven’t changed. What makes you a more attractive candidate this year?

I’m sure others have mentioned this to you, but have you considered community colleges and a transfer later? Or applying to less selective four-year colleges?

The process would be the same. I would try to TAG to one of the UC’s this time if you meet the requirements.

@Groundwork2022 since OP posted in the Transfer student forum and stated they are staying another year, I am assuming they are at a Community college currently.

@KeepItCool: Valid questions are asked by @Groundwork2022. Why do you think you were rejected? Missing major pre-req’s? Low GPA?

What have done this year to make you a better candidate?

Well since you didn’t get in anywhere it would be best to bring something new to the table; a few more classes, maybe an EC and I would suggest jazzing up a couple of essays, even if you keep two. They do want to see some forward movement.

And like @Gumbymom said it would behoove you to ascertain why you got rejected.

@Ohm888 @Gumbymom Yes. I am already at a Community College. I completed all the prerequisites and IGETC last year. The reason I did not get in was most likely due to my GPA not being competitive enough. It was 3 .4 when I applied last this, but this time around, it will most likely be a 3.6(computer science major btw). I am planning on spending more time on my personal statements, but other than that, I am not sure what else I can do differently besides the personal statements and GPA. I have been working on personal CS projects and competing in tennis tournaments if that is worth mentioning.

Bumping up your GPA will help. Are you TAGing to an campuses? This would give you a safety UC.

I would mention your CS projects and Tennis competitions, but it would have been more helpful to have some CS related Internship or Job while you were still taking classes.

Best of luck.

Thank you. I do not know how or where to start for cs intership or job. I feel like I do not have enough experience for those yet being a 2nd year cs major.

My son got an internship in IT with the Department of Justice after his Sophomore year as a CS major. Although not exactly a CS internship, he made a lot of contacts which lead to 2 more CS/Cybersecurity related internships following his 3rd and 4th years in College.

Just get you foot in the door to rack up some experience.

okay Im worried I have a 3.4 but I tagged uc Davis and I’m a psych major which is very impacted. I feel like I won’t get in anywhere

I know several students that have found CS internships after their sophomore year. You should be working with the career center at your CC for starters. Also your CS profs could be a good source of ideas for finding internships. A number of instructors at CCC are either from industry and teaching because they enjoy it, or consult with industry as well as teach onsite classes to employees at various companies. The point is they should be able to give you relevant advice and may also have contacts in industry.

By “all UCs”, do you mean all nine campuses, or all of those you applied to that are not all nine?

Consider adding additional less selective UC campuses and CSUs the next time.
