That is a new twist. I'll post the point system for both and see if you can spot any difference.

I have a friend who has 3.2 GPA(w) got into Davis.

I seriously think it's about luck and all...can't really categorize their selections.

We're been saying for UCSD and UCD it's not the academics that get you in, it's other stuff. You get 300 for first generation, that is equivalent of 300 point of the SAT and it's equivalent of .3 in GPA. Family income less than $60K another 300 points so that is 600 SAT points or .60 in GPA. Educational Environment- Identified schools which fall into the 4th or 5th quintiles (300 points for applicants from 4th and 5th quintile schools)so that is 900 points of the SAT and .9 in GPA. Most likely there are students that qualify for all those points. And a lot more, so a person come from a poor background could be counting on knocking off 1200 of the 4000 points SAT or 1.2 in GPA. I know we should give students from lower socio ecomic background a boost but that is just simply too much.

It can also be all about the academics. By taking a lot more classes in a broad range of subjects you can earn 1000 extra points. That is all about the academics.

someone I know with a 3.9 UW and a 1950ish got rejected. sucks!!

Disclaimer. I have no beef in this fight. My daughter did not apply to UCD. Just debating.

Yes but they don't have to be honors or APs. Just take regular class in high school. A lot of kids get stressed out by how many APs, according to the point system, there is no account for that.

does davis give points for community service? I can tell that SD does and I had a ton of hours...maybe thats why I got into one and not the other??

Columbia_Student
NO UC gives weighting for AP, honors or community college classes beyond the 8 semester limit. They all have the same limit. UCD just gives additional weight to taking more academic classes beyond the required.

playdolove I think UCD focuses more on leadership in community service.

That's messed up. Circumstances you can't change matter more than those you can.
