Rejection

Hurts.

I was rejected today by UCD, my "match" school. I have known so many people who have gotten in with poor grades and scores, and I'm just shocked. The only thing that could have tarnished my app. is my SAT Subject Test scores, but, even at that, they weren't SO terrible.

Even worse, my (safer than safe) safety school, SJSU, the only state school I applied for, wait listed and then rejected me before even viewing my application because I don't live in Santa Clara County, and I applied in the last week the app. was available. They automatically rejected everyone who applied in this time frame.

Anyway, I'm waiting on:

UCB
UCSC
Lewis and Clark

I just feel so horribly depressed... But, probably more than anything, very angry! I have a friend who scored a 1340 on the SAT, and she got into Davis because of ELC! I am in the top 12% in a fairly competitive school, and I have taken on as many classes as nine at one time. My 10-12 weighted GPA is 3.96. My SAT was a mediocre 1890. I volunteer, work, have had steady community involvement (with the school district, newspaper, and a variety of non-profits) for the past five years. I am the first person in my entire family (including aunts, uncles, etc...) to go to college.

Anyway, enough of the crying/pity partying... On to my questions: Has anyone ever appealed a uni. decision? I'm considering doing just that with regard to Davis... Also, what do you think my chances are for the remaining three? Am I just SOL?

Don't worry your stats are pretty good, you have a really good shot at UCSC. State schools are becoming very competitive.

Sorry to double post, but I'd also like to add that my school has little extracurricular opportunity. Our district is just short of broke, and we have no athletics programs to speak of but soccer, and there are only one or two school clubs.

My school doesn't offer too many AP courses, and certain classes that many schools deem necessary such as physics and calculus are not yet offered. Because of poor selection, I have taken a few classes out at a community college.

I sincerely hope those things are not the reason for my rejection from UCD, but is it something for me to consider? I can't exactly choose where I live, you know...

Thanks so much for the help. I'm terrified over here.

Edit: Thanks whatsup! Any encouragement helps a lot.

it was not just you. UCD was very weird this year. My friend who got into michigan the best public school in the country, got rejected from UCD.

i agree with ruskie. its no biggie! i think you shoulf go for the appeal. your stats are good, and theres no reason not to try.
Don't worry, i think you have a shot at UCSC

Maybe you should reevaluate your college list- an 1890 ain't pretty.

I agree with basketballbabe13 and ruskie. Good luck!

Try not to get discouraged and definitely do not take it personally.

There are no rejections. Only acceptances, as those are what counts. Acceptances at colleges are based not only on grades, but location of where you live, color of skin. financial need, male vs female. There are so many factors that are biased. The competition for spots everywhere is incredible. It is no reflection on you if you are not accepted. We always joked that the ad reps throw the stack of applications in the air and those that hit the ground first are in. There's just not room for everybody.

You have some great schools on your list. Hopefully you will be able to make a good choice out of those you are accepted to. You can be happy anywhere and do well. Just focus on the schools you are accepted to because that's all that matters.

I applied to 9 places and so far, been rejected from 3! :( One of them was my safety school. Its so depressing. I'm thinking of turning down the idea of studying in U.S.

I've heard Uc Davis is very weird with their acceptances this year. Staying very local.
It's probably the most difficult year to get into a state school.

My oldest went to UCSC and loved it. Good luck.

Thanks, all. Yeah, I'm hoping for UCSC now. If not that... I don't know what I'll do. I just applied to UCB for the hell of it, by the way... I'm not nor have I ever expected to be admitted.

Boy, this news is really not sitting well with me. I slept for like 12 hrs. and woke up with the worst headache. Agh.

talha_adnan: I'm so sorry to hear that. Hopefully things will turn up for the both of us before April starts.

Zenbadabing: Maybe you should reevaluate your knowledge of the UC system. I have known students who have failed required classes who have gotten in, even to Cal.

lol i didnt get into davis either so dont worry

i have a 2190 sat lol

UCSD's out today
myapplication.ucsd.edu.

..rejection hurts. A LOT

i guess that means a rejection from LA and Berkeley too huh?

^ Not necessarly

I know people rejected from UCI and got into LA and/or Cal

rejection does hurt, guys.... check this out, last year

I got rejected to ALL UCs

-UCSB
-UCI
-UCD

It sucked, and I think it was because of my lame essays (really mediocre writing now that I look back on it) and not turning in the stuff at time (immature on my part)

keep ur chins up guys, you'll get somewhere!
State schools are cutting down many because they get most of their funding from the state.

you're a transfer then?

thanks for the words of encouragement :)

Alright, folks.

Welp, I've gotten in to UCSC, as well as a private in CA which offered me a $10k scholarship.

And it seems that those of us who are so upset about Davis are not at all alone... A quick Google search yielded this:

Got rejected by UC Davis? - Yahoo! Answers

Rejected and confused. Rejected from UC Davis with 3.8 GPA and 1900 SAT. Thought UC Davis was a safety.? - Yahoo! Answers

It makes sense that spots are being cut so fewer people may be admitted, but what is up with this super duper low score trend? Like I said, I have a friend who got in with a 1340 SAT! Those Y!A links further prove this...
