Wow your stats and stuff look pretty nice. Well I do know that Rice and Northwestern are incredibly crazy to get into so even if someone had a 2400 and all 800s, that person could get rejected from those. Don't know too much about the other programs on your list. Are you saying that you did not even get interviews at these places or are you saying you got rejected post-interview? If you didn't get interviews, I would be pretty shocked.

ya there clearly has to be something wrong because you look like a top candidate for these programs you have the whole package maybe you might need a 2250+ on your SAT's and did u apply to BU you probably could get in there!!!!!!!!!!!

i think that this year, the competition has been really damn high. do not worry HighschoolDOC, you will definately get in to a top tier regular undergraduate program.

to your question: maybe you do not have enough volunteer hours? just an i dea.

There aren't any set requirements usually unless school says so explicitly. You need SAT/ACT and sometimes SAT II scores, possibly some recommendations, transcript. Other stuff that is not needed but highly recommended: volunteer hours (a big big thing this should be a requirement in all truth), research, EMT work, anything unusual that can tell them you really want to do medicine.

BA/MD programs are different in that their purpose is to find the best, most qualified group of students who are sure medicine is their career goal without a shred of a doubt. As a reward for knowing so early and doing so well in HS, they can opt out of taking the MCAT and many of the annoyances of medical school application. If you can get into a good program, I highly recommend you consider it carefully.

HighschoolDOC i think we're the same person, tho I am caucasian. Rejected NW HPME, no interview to BU.

Stats are almost identical:
GPA 4.5/4.0
11 APs (Chem 4, Bio 5, Comp Sci 5, US Hist 4, Span 3)
ACT: 35 (32 English, 35 Math, 36 Reading, 36 Science)
SAT IIs: Math II-800, Math I-790, Bio (M)-780, Chem-750
National Merit, AP whatever scholar, Science Team, Math Team, Tutored, Cross Country for 3 years Regional Qualifier, Went to states for quizbowl and Spanish forensics.
Worked in a hospital. Interned with the chief of Cardiovascular Surgery and got a letter.

Your test scores are amazing and your EC's are great as well. maybe your essays weren't that great? I have much lower SAT scores, but i feel that my essay is what helped me get interviews at BU and at Miami.

Highschool Doc your stats seem to be typical of the kids who are ALREADY in the program and they definitely warrant an interview at most, if not all, of the places. The only thing that could be holding u back are those essays....i know that my essay(s) was one of the stronger aspects of my entire app. If you want, send me one/two of your essays and I can tell if they sent any red flags or not. Cuz if i were in your shoes i would be wondering the same EXACT thing.

No clinical experience? Like Shadowing and other than the NIH research your e.c's are average for this level (very involved but nothing unique outstanding?) A lot of people have EMS certification/Volunteer Firefighters or published. But if you are a Michigan resident I am very surprised about the MSU Medical Scholars thing (not even an interview?), did you apply to Wayne State MedStart as well?

bharath2007 I have over 150 hours of volunteer service at the hospital, I created an underprivaleged tutoring program, I established the science olympiad, I won first place in the science fair.........I thought that this would be good enough

yes i applied to wayne state med start and made the first cut..however im not sure this is where I wanna go ...as u still need 2 take the MCAT and u hav 2 go 2 Wayne State Undergraduate for 4 years

With Wayne, I thought that the MCAT was still required to be taken but your scores don't matter as you are automatically matriculated into their medical program after 4 years of undergrad.

I am in agreeance with the others in two things:

I think a lack of true desire to go into medicine can show itself. I'm Indian dude, I know that most kids are forced to go into medicine. Don't even try to deny that.

I think that when you lack a certain desire to do something, it can show itself in something such as an essay or maybe even in an interview if you cannot disguise yourself well enough.

But you have that desire, and that is where the confusion lies. You created a tutoring program, I mean come on you have what it takes for sure.

It has to be the Indian thing. Being Indian, you must prove yourself over and over and over again.

Also from a personal aspect 150 hours may seem like too little. I have a plan to hit around 400 total hours by the end of the summer.

Probably won't matter though. I know I won't get in, and seeing as how I'm Indian it just seems like the whole thing isn't even worth the effort.
