I'm really interested in several New England schools, and I'm wondering how open the Tufts campus community is to people with strong religious beliefs. Is it open and welcoming? Skeptical? Hostile? How would you characterize life at Tufts for a religious person?

Just visited this weekend as a parent. You don’t say which religion, but I am sure you will find an active community and plenty of support, whatever your beliefs. For example, I know the Hillel House has a very active Jewish community. And the front of the chapel gives dates and times of worship for Catholic, Protestant, Muslim, and Jewish services. They also have support for Hinduism, Buddhism, etc. through Chaplain Services. Inclusivity is very important at Tufts.

There’s support for everyone. My son was actually surprised at how few are out and out atheists like himself.

So long as you’re accepting of everyone else’s religious beliefs and don’t discriminate against anyone, you’ll be well accepted in return.

I never saw any religious discrimination at Tufts. I think the students are, for the most part, interested in learning about other religions. For example, I went to a few things at Hillel with my friends, and also took them to the Catholic Advent services in Goddard. It’s a pretty open environment as far as religious tolerance.
