My mother is Catholic and my father is Lutheran. I have attended both churches growing up, but I have been more active in the Catholic church (including one listed EC). I was baptized Lutheran, but I was never confirmed in either denomination. My parents wanted to let me choose as an adult. But, I am not sure what to put on the Common App demographic "religious preference."

I am applying to Catholic, evangelical and secular colleges. I am considering putting "Other-Christian" and "Mother-Catholic/Father-Lutheran. I haven't chosen." I don't want to look like I don't know what I believe, but I have grown up with respect for both faiths. In all honesty, I haven't chosen.

Does anyone have any thoughts?

Thanks!!

The secular schools won’t care, the Catholics probably prefer Catholics, but aren’t going to be turned off by a hybrid, particularly a Lutheran, and the evangelical schools are going to be a case by case basis. Depending on the school and the denomination, some may care (in a negative direction), but most of them probably don’t care all that much.

Don’t know if this helps, but honestly, put down what you are most comfortable with and let the chips fall where they may. Do you really want to go to a school that would discriminate against you on the basis of your faith? I don’t think you’re dishonoring either faith by putting down any answer, it’s not like they’re going to hold you to it. (Although putting down “I haven’t chosen” may be the worst possible answer, as it just makes you look wishy-washy. It’s unnecessary, even if it is honest.)
