Religious values

and i'm a art history major...so my knowledge of science as i have shown must humiliate those science or philosophy majors....

Another way to bypass the need for a cause lies with Einstein's relativity, Minkovski coordinates(x,y,z,c*t), and the light hypercone. Inside the hypercone, where the speed of objects is less than the speed of light, time flows as we know it, and all things must have a cause. Outside the hypercone, where speed is greater than c, the cause-effect relationship ceases to exist. This can be proven mathematically. So, if we assume that at the moment of the Big Bang, or even before, things were moving faster than the speed the light, or whatever, maybe light was slower (as you know, the laws of physics changed from that moment - see the Unification Theory) or something, then things didn't need a cause to exist.
Of course, this is obviously beyond human perception. So? The universe has no reason to be more understandable by humans than by cats. It doesn't care about it, it just exists. And so do we. There is no greater reason for which we exist. It could've been just as easily trees reading this forum now. It's just the way it happened. To think otherwise just means you're giving yourselves too much importance.

If you've been religious and been keeping the rules of Christian or whatever religion you're in, then ...whether God exists or not doesn't hurt you!

1 if God exists, you might be rewarded for living a good life and following the rules.

2 if God exists and you have not followed his rules, been partying all ur life, mess around with people, then you will receive punishment.

3 if God doesn't exist, then you don't lose anything. If anything you lived a good life, you treat others nicely ... blah blah blah, so what if God doesn't exist? the point is to live a good life!

You forgot number 4. I'll add it for you

4 if God exists, and wants you to party all your life, mess around with people, but you have been living a good life, you will receive punishment.

Tell me why is mine less plausible than yours?

And no, "It is so written in the scriptures!" is not a valid argument. I could also write scriptures myself. Under divine inspiration, of course. God's existence, if proven, would still not make the Bible valid.

Wow chaos that is not a good argument. So believe because hey, it's good right?

Why don't you just believe in every religion to play it really safe? I mean hey, one of those gods has to be right! If you believe in them all, you are sure to win!!!

Yeah the bible has as much truth to it as a fantasy fiction.

wait... you mean harry potter isn't real?!

lol, on a more serious note, will someone please give me a working definition of an agnostic? And then athiest too while you're at it...

This is the Jewish Buddhist (female!) btw

I've got to sat that...(cough have better cough, cough things to do than post on yet another pollitical/religious debate cough, cough)..and this means that christians...(cough shouldn't be lured into these time-wasting topics cough)...and so to conclude, my views are unasaultable, and they cannot be contradicted or verified so I have won this arguement!

Lol Jewish Buddhist. SOOOO MANY contradictions in a mere two words. The hilarity. Welcome back.

And we all know Harry Potter totally is real. That's as true as the laws of gravity.

"Jewish Buddhist" is no more of a contradiction than, say "Polish Buddhist." Being Jewish can represent either a a person's religion or an ethnic group into which he or she was born.

wow-- I have a supporter-- this is actually amazing!

Huey's attempting to find me a category to box myself into lol-- tell me if anyone else has any suggestions if you want to bother reading all of the posts from me on here...

charizard, are u high on something??

guys, i thought i won the argument on God. go back and see my post.

jewish buddhist...hey! uma thurman is supposed to be buddhist. her father was a monk in nepal or something and "uma" is supposed to be a hundu goddess. thurman is the true blonde!!!she has found her aryan origin in central asia!!!

Baptist who loves God but realizes pushing my religion on someone else will cause them to run away from God not run to Him

I second Robotab's question...what's everyone's definition of agnosticism? And atheism?

Wow, i am don't frequently visit this specific forum thing (College life) but i am surprised there aren't any Muslims that are knee deep into this conversation...

I mean in Islam, there are many scientific miracles that have been said in the Kor'an.

http://www.speed-light.info/angels_speed_of_light.htm

that site has many scientific miracles of the Koran...

i will also try and answer any of your questions about Islam if you have any...i will be respectful of all religions and not "dis" anyone or their religions and i hope that you will not just bash Islam but instead just ask questions for info, not for proof..

for those of you asking about agnostics and athiests:

my definition:
agnostic: someone who is skeptical of both science and a divine power; states theres no real way to know (at this time); as agnostic means "no knowledge;" many ppl place agnostic next to athiest but there are SOOO many (actually most I'd say) agnostics that practice a religion, but are skeptical
athiest: someone who does not believe in god at all

Sheed-- we were discussing Islam is religious studies the other day. I was wondering if you agreed with our conclusion that the violence in the Middle East is attributed to the culture, as opposed to the peaceful religion of Islam. We thought that the people in the Middle East have grown so accustomed to the figting and need to defend their religion, and have interpreted the Koran to mean that they have the right and the obligation to defend themselves against any threatening force, including US foreign poilicy...

Is this analysis correct? I can't really see any reason why it wouldn't be, as Islam itself is indeed very similar to all the other major world religions (Christianity, Judaism) in that it stresses peace, and the violence should be separated from the religion...

i'm atheist but i'm not agnostic. not every religion has a god (regardless of whether there really IS a god or not). it's quite hilarious when somebody asked me how i can have a religion without a god... well, it's just not quite american doesn't mean it doesn't exist.

and about the muslim thing. remember there was a period where the islamic region of the world went beyond the european part in terms of academic... during the dark age. i know that the quran is strictly unchangeable (as i learned from my religious studies class), but that could still be added to the quran anw. and besides, it can be a mock quote or a coincidence.
