Reminder about April Fools Day

This article is making a point. I always thought that there was a correlation between hs performance, including number of AP courses taken, and college performance. I have read for a long time about SAT scores having little correlation in terms of college performance, but now grades in hs do not correlate either? Interesting.

BTW, it is dumb, IMO, to publish a joke, as something newsworthy in education. To me news should be about fact, not fiction.

There is a correlation between high school grades and college grades, but as was pointed out, the high school grades of Brown freshman had little variability (probably mostly between 3.8 and 4.0 unweighted, right?) so adding in the variability in grading in high school, it is a lot like they all (not ALL all, but you know what I mean) came in with the same GPA.

It's like trying to correlate the spread of freshman scores in a class at Brown with a single high school grade, everyone having a 3.9 on the x axis.

So perhaps they should pick randomly out of a hat.

What a great spoof and apparently not far-fetched enough to be immediately seen as a joke. And it probably could work, too. Let's suppose some good, but not seemingly great students, were admitted to Brown or another Ivy quite by accident. After the initial surprise wore off, couldn't you imagine how the kid might begin to say to psych himself up for success and say to himself "Wow! I'm good enough to get in Brown. I never thought it would happen, but they must have seen something in me. I wonder what that something was? Well, my grades aren't super, but I really am pretty smart..." And then, determined to prove he is worthy of their vote of confidence, the kid goes on to do very well there.

A funny story I just read about today.

It’s definitely time to bring up my post here. Parents every year get fooled by fake news stories and ■■■■■ posts here on CC. Forewarned is forearmed. Have a safe and happy April 1st.

Here’s a link to the top 100 April Fools Day hoaxes of all time.

Some are quite funny.

Aw, token, what a spoiler! Now my post about being stranded on an island with nothing except my laptop and 3 hrs of battery life will not get any replies.

One more thing to watch for is Google. They are always up to something, offering amazing new and free features…like the time they announced a new feature to let you change the time stamp on outgoing emails- so you could ‘make’ missed deadlines, for example.

Early April Fools in California:

Thanks for the reminder. It made me go check Google’s Home page. I liked the year they offered to send you hard copies of all your emails.

tokenadult, the Minnesota Daily is a disappointment today. No joke issue as in previous years.

Or is that remark on page one likening Coleman’s chances of winning over Franken “a mathematical possibility, but it’s probably akin to you winning your NCAA bracket pool” not factual?

Played a joke on my h today. Sneaked into his office and pressed CTRL, ALT and the down arrow on his laptop. Turns the screen upside down. His first thought was a virus - LOL - but I couldn’t keep a straight face. Easy to turn back (just do the same thing with an up arrow).

I am hoping the news I got regarding a themed wedding next fall is an April Fool’s day joke

That’s too bad. The Minnesota Daily joke issue on April 1st has been quite funny over the years.

toneranger, you are a devil…

yeah, toneranger, I am now stuck with my screen upside down- the up arrow doesn’t work to turn it back up!

Bringing up my post for a new year.

seriously, Toneranger, that is fabulous! Now…how does it work for Macs?

Thanks for bringing this up.

NPR can also fool you on April 1st. I listened, with horror, to a story about exploding maple trees a few years ago and fell for it completely. They had interviews, scientific excerpts, everything for the gullible to heed about a sugaring time gone wrong. I got out of my car before the story ended and never heard the “April Fool’s” line and was telling my friends about it for days. Finally, I told a friend who worked for NPR and he got a real strange look in his eye and told me the truth. I bet I made his office very happy!

OK, toneranger, I did it … now my screen resolution is seriously screwed up. Thanks for the fun?

How do I re-set it back to normal… I don’t want to deal with this huge kindergarten sized text forever. I have tried the right-click and properties and resetting.

Geeez, never trust someone you don’t know in person!!!
