As an incoming freshman, I submitted my FAFSA last year for the first time. For some reason, I think I recall hearing from someone that I should use the renewal FAFSA in subsequent years because it will simply the process for me. However, I do not see any such "renewal form" when I log into FAFSA - Free Application for Federal Student Aid.

Can someone please tell me if such a renewal form exists, and if so, where I may be able to find it? Also, if it does exist, I suspect it come pre-filled with some of the information from the prior year, and then you adjust information accordingly to reflect the current reporting year. Is there anything else I would need to be aware of when filling on a renewal form?

I am not ready to fill out the FAFSA yet - still need tax forms - but I am starting to get myself organized and figured I would check now rather than last minute.

Thanks very much for any help you can provide.

You start doing the 2009-2010 FAFSA. After you enter some basic information (name/ssn etc) it will come back and say that you have done a FAFSA previously and do you want to have the personal information taken from your previous FAFSA. You will need your PIN. It will fill in personal info but not financial info.

for the very quick response! I appreciate you taking the time to respond.

I guess I would have eventually figured this out when I entered my 2009-2010 FAFSA. But, considering I was thinking there was a separate form altogether, I probably would have spent unnecessary time searching for it. So, your response has been very helpful.

It's weird, isn't it, that seeing as 3/4 of the FAFSA filers are renewals, you would think that they would make renewal information much more apparent on the web site, and in general. But they don't. The advice you were given is absolutely correct!

In prior years, the renewal form was a separate link. Only the 08-09 and the 09-10 have removed the link, in an attempt to make it less confusing. Remember, the Feds are making the decisions....and we all know how confused they are :)

I also have another question regarding the CSS Profile that I was hoping someone could help me out with. I have also emailed my question(s) to the FA office at my school. But, I haven't heard back yet because they too have been on break until next week (and I suspect their priority once they get back is to respond to perspective 1st year students who have earlier FA deadlines). Anyway, here is my question:

The college that I currently attend required the FAFSA and Profile initially. I know that I need to fill out the FAFSA each year, but I am not sure about the Profile. I have not been able to find anything on my school's website that indicates that the Profile also needs to be re-submitted each year. However, when I look at the college board listing CSS Profile schools, I see my school listed ... just not sure if again, this listing is specific to first year students or renewal students. So, can someone tell me if it is standard for colleges to require a new Profile annually, or is this typically just a 1st year requirement with the Profile being replaced by some other school-specific form thereafter?

I understand that there probably is not one answer fits all here. So, as mentioned, I have contacted my school for confirmation of their renewal requirements but I thought I would throw it out here for those who may have past experience with the Profile.

You are right to check with you school
At my son's school he had to complete the FAFSA and the Profile as an incoming freshman. Renewal only required the FAFSA and a short form specific to the college

check your college's website. they may have the information listed there.
Or tell us and we'll look it up for you :-)

Tomorrow is going to be a bad day (but I'll be trying myself!) to contact admins and FA officers. First day back after break is going to be BUSY

and if you are like me, you don't like having to wait for an answer you might be able to find out yourself

I appreciate your willingness to look it up for me, but I have actually already checked my school's website (usually, it's my first stop for all questions because it's easier than waiting on response or return call from the school offices). Unfortunately, however, there is nothing listed on the website yet for renewal FA. They do have a link on the site that lists requirements w/ deadline dates for 1st year students. But, in the section that appears to be where they will be posting renewal FA info, there is no active link posted at this point.

Who knows - it's my first year applying for renewal aid, so maybe I am ahead of the game with even thinking about this. But, considering the fact that I know that I will be needing some level of aid, I'd rather be proactive in finding out what is needed ahead of time, rather than waiting last minute and running the risk of missing something that disqualifies me from all aid.

I guess I will just have to wait on a response back from the FA office. I am hoping the the Profile is not needed this year because it would be nice to not have to pay for the $25 fee to TRY to get financial aid (not to mention, nice to not have to fill out another form).
