My S has won this and was just notified there will be a special visiting day in September. Has anyone here attended this, and can give me more details? We would like to make travel arrangements asap, due to $ and school scheduling considerations. (they say there is an invitation coming, but not when)

My son is entering RPI next month and is a medalist--I checked their calendar and Medalist day this year will be on Saturday September 10 from 9AM to 3PM (if you want, go to the Rensselaer website, go to the search page under calendar of events and click under the monthly calendar for September 10, but there is not much info posted yet). Believe me, they will send you stuff about it, this school is very organized about keeping you informed! Basically, they'll give you a bunch of speeches about RPI, campus tours, dorm tours, departmental tours for what you are interested in, information about the school, lunch, a free tshirt, information about clubs and activities, and you can get a whole bunch of questions about the school answered.

I have also received the medal and the notification recently, and since I have never heard about RPI, I'm very curious. It seems like a nice college, but I'm not nearly informed enough to make my decision, I'll probably end up visiting. Thank you lighthouse for further information, I was wondering around what time the day was going to start.

If anyone wants actual information on the school and not bull **** answers sent by admission, but truths about professors, alcohol, partying, whatever, ask here or send me an email at johnmurray@gmail.com

I was wondering what would be the best/cheapest way to get to RPI. The Medal Day is almost a month away and I have to start figuring out how to get there. Would it be cheaper to fly straight to Albany or NYC and then go by car to RPI?

I would assume you're from far enough away that you need to fly and not drive. You'd have to check expedia or something for flight costs differences, but I am almost positive that it would be cheaper to fly into Albany airport, which is just up the road 20 minutes or so from RPI's campus. I would imagine a cab would cost 20-$30, though it could be less. Anyway, I'm gonna be gone for the rest of this week on a fraternity conference (flying out of Albany as it happens to be. So I can answer any questions in the future when I get back)

Definitely fly to Albany airport. Where do u live, by the way?
NYC is still about 3 hours drive from Troy, and would require using Amtrak ($80 roundtrip) + cab to campus (another $20 each way)

I live in the Chicago suburbs, a couple miles away from Midway airport. When I briefly checked flights around last week, it seemed like most flights to Albany had many hour-long breaks in between. I've heard that sometimes there are little carpools going from NYC, which could be cheaper and I could meet some possible classmates :D. Since the Medal day starts around 9 AM, I was wondering if it would be better to fly Friday night and find someone to room with for the night?

We are flying up Friday night from Baltimore. Check out Southwest Airlines from Midway to Albany--our flight from Baltimore is $27 each way for each of us. They are always lower than most other airlines and don't participate in things like expedia or travelocity.

RPISoxFan, we would appreciate any of your thoughts. I take it that you are currently a student there?

I am a student at rpi,
I live about an hour west of NYC, so I don't fly and have never looked into flight info to Albany, but its a 3 hour drive for me (same for nyc), and have taken the Amtrak before -- you would have to come the day before if you're taking the train or car from nyc since it will take a few hours.
What is the date of medal day? I'm sure you can find somone to room with, and theres also a Best Western hotel walking distance from campus

The medal day is September 10th. I'm not too worried about finding someone to room with (met someone on another forum). Sorry for the late reply, I've been busy. I still have to decide what to do about getting there, but flying to albany would probably be the best option.
