Renting a studio in Berkeley or surrounding area

Hi, I'm looking to live in a studio by myself next year. I live in a dorm right now and I have decided that I do not want to live with roommates anymore. I get along fine with most people as friends, not as roommates.

Does anyone know where I can find a studio to live in that has its own kitchen? When should I start looking for a place to rent, and about how much is the average rent for a studio in Berkeley?

Thank you so much in advance! :]

spend a lot of time on sfbay.cribq.com

studios are probably going to be about $1000. If it’s for next year, you should probably start looking around March. And don’t limit yourself to just Southside, Northside is pretty great :)

It ranges between $900-$1300. $900 gets you a pretty bad studio, $1000 gets you something decent, and you get some extremely nice ones as you keep on going up.

Craigslist and CalRentals are good places to look.

maaae, I was thinking the same thing as you. And while at first it seems like it’d be SOOO Much better to live without roommates, I think you should consider living with friends but not as roommates. You can have your own separate rooms, stay over at their place, let them stay at yours in the dorms, and see how they treat you. If you feel like they live in a style that you don’t like, try again and see if it works. If not find other people. Honestly I think it’ll be very scary and lonely if you don’t have someone at least in your house. No one will know if you are okay unless you meet with someone every day and you just don’t show up one day. But as of now, I’m definitely sharing with some friends. But i used to think in the same way you did.

I have lived by myself ever since sophomore year in a studio. It’s honestly not lonely if you’re really active. I’m so busy with school and work that it’s nice to come home to a quiet space where I can get my sleep and relax. And as for friends, I do the best I can to hang out with them when we both have time. If you busy yourself enough, you don’t notice how lonely you are living by yourself.

Yeah, I guess that’s true. Hmm…now that’s got me thinking again. lol I DO get annoyed when I’m studying and other people can’t be quiet or if they start making noise while I’m sleeping. Hmmm darn. idk what to do now! AH well I guess I won’t have to decide for a while (because of what I’m doing in the future).

Having my own room = BEST THING EVER!

@OP Studios are really expensive. I think a good compromise is getting your own room. That way, you can have the privacy but also save some money.

I don’t understand how people were like I LOVE HAVING ROOMMATES as freshman. Like it would bother me sooo much to have someone in my face all the time.

I liked the idea of having a roommate in the beginning. But actually living with a roommate… I hated it!

Did they share the room with you or the apartment? I think if they share the apartment, it would be fine wouldn’t it? Idk. That way you still can isolate yourself in your room if you feel like it.

I shared a room. People can argue about sharing a room both ways. But for me, I prefer to have my own space. There are so many little things about having a roommate that ticks me off.

THANK YOU all for your replies! :D

Yeah… my weeknights are pretty busy and I just want to come home to a nice and quiet space, like sparetire said. One of my friends lives in a studio for less than $700 a month-- it’s relatively small and there is only a communal kitchen if you want to cook. I’ve some some places online for around $700 - $800, but not very many and all of them are for immediate lease. I would need to lease after May.

If you can’t find a studio, there are a few single rooms in the ads since some students are studying aboard or graduating. Having your own room beats living with a roommate. Go on craigslist and look for some! I was in your situation this semester. I hate living with a roommate.

Not lookin to lease till after may? well it’s not a studio but its private. I have a nice room for rent in my apartment starting in the summer semester. You’d have your own private fully-furnished room and only be living with one, very quiet-mature, roommate! If you are interested PM me and I’ll give you details :)

Yeah I’m a lot like you then lol. Roommates can be such a pain in the azz. Some people never grew up or they’re just to full of themselves to compromise or respect others. Especially here I think. People are smart. Which makes it worse lol at least in high school, people were pretty stupid and go along with anything. but people here definitely have the attitude that “I get what I want” as far as grades, and anything else.
