Repeat SAT II or retake SAT? Please advise

Hi,

Please help with some advice.

My daughter has very good ACT and PSAT scores, not so good SAT I, and bad SAT II scores. Can you please advise us what would be the best approach now.

Would it be better to retake the SAT II or would it be better to improve the SAT I? She is looking at Rice, Davidson, Williams, Vandy, and Emory.

ACT composite (33) - (M-34, E-34, S-29)
PSAT (220)
CGPA (3.85 unweighted, 5.5 weighted)
Top 5% in competitive high school
SAT I --> M-700, CR-650, W-770, Essay - 11/12
SAT II --> Literature-700, MathII-650, Physics-580

thanks

Her SATI score is not bad and you can send just the ACT score. I would take SATII again in October. And if she feel that she can improve SATI score substantially, maybe she can take SATI again in December but that would not be in time of early decision application. Her ACT score is competitive already for the schools listed.

Thanks.

Would you suggest that she not send in her SAT I and SAT II scores at all – or just send the SAT II English scores alone?

She can probably bump her math up to a 720. She wont be taking physics again – she hopes to take Bio or Chem and make hopefully a 650-750 score.

Oh yes, not all schools want SAT II scores, it is actually optional for some schools. Also some schools want 2 SAT II scores and some want 3 SAT II scores. Depending on the major or school within the college, some may even require certain subjects like Math. I would check against the list of schools you have and make sure you have everything covered. Looking at the list you gave, I imagine most of those schools will require at least 2 SATIIs, so it is probably not possible to send just the English score.

As for whether to send in SAT I or just ACT. I am really not sure. I remember reading someone who said that not sending in SAT score and only send ACT score could be disadvantage for some schools. I really can’t tell for sure which is better, maybe some one else can chime in.
