Repeating a year in boarding school

Guys do you think is better to repeat the sophomore year in a top boarding school (SPS, Exeter..) in order to get into a good college(MIT, Harvard, Yale..)?

No. Go to a top BS because you want an amazing experience and amazing education.

The kids who graduate form these schools report that they have tighter ties to their BS than to their college

Yes, I totally agree with you. But do you think if I repeat the sophomore year it will be easier to get into college?(the admission process) because some people say that enetering in the the junior year would be too tough, and stressful and would maybe prejudice my college application

Yes, by a long shot

Ok thank you, just a question you can answer or not, but how do you know so much about these things?

I am no expert. I can only share learnings from our own family’s experience.

Our family went through the admissions process once, w S1 successfully enrolled in a well-regarded BS. BS is not part of our family’s tradition, so we had to learn as we go. We are now gearing up to go thru the process again w S2 in the future.

I have talked to S’s dean & faculty advisors at his BS, traded notes with other parents, and have been avidly researching news articles. And like you, I have been asking and reading advice on CC.

Guys more opinions please

Reasons why repeating 10th grade may be a good idea:

1) most prep schools take a fair number of new 9th and 10th graders. There are far fewer 11th grade spots.

2) 11th grade is the most demanding year, and grades are extremely important. It may be hard to adjust to a new school and there is no chance to make up any less than ideal grades.

3) More time in prep school helps develop the ECs that colleges value

4) More time knowing advisor and teachers may translate into more complete detailed letter of recommendation.

5)11th grade is very busy with PSAT, SAT/ACTs and prep, starting college visits in addition to academics. With early applications becoming more frequent, more college app work is being pushed into junior year, especially for athletes.

and by the way, GMT gives very good advice. Not sure how to give him more green squares but he deserves them.

but do you think if I want to get into MIT it would be MUCH better to repeat a year?

Your chances of getting into MIT are probably not going to be measurably impacted by repeating or not repeating a year at BS, any more than your chances of winning the Powerball lottery jacket are going to be measurably impacted by buying one ticket vs. two tickets.

Either prize has lower odds than a crapshoot no matter what.

but if I repeat a year is there a bigger probability of I have better AP grades, and do better on my college app?

Are you going to keep asking the same question over and over again until you hear the answer you want?

GMT, you beat me to it!

Planck, probability is just that. Too many variables factor into the end result to make any advance prognostications. And this group of strangers can’t really answer such a critical question for you. This is one you’ll have to decide for yourself.

ok guys anyway thank you

I repeated 11th grade in boarding school and I am SO grateful for that. I learned so much more in two years at boarding school than I would have in only one. It definitely prepared me to go to a much better college than I would have otherwise.
