Hi, all,
I play an unusual instrument (not specifying here) at a very high level. On my resume on the Common App, should I list the repertoire (quite a long list) I have acquired over the years? I do not have any awards for my instrument, nor have I won any competitions because there are none. I do not plan on majoring on music, but music is my primary extracurricular, and I’m hoping to let colleges know that I am serious. I will also be submitting a music portfolio.
Thanks!
If added into the activities section of the common app when it asks to describe your activity you could be like “repertoire includes:” and then list 2 of your most impressive pieces.
There is no need to list all your repertoire but just like you would give details such as amount of Money raised if it was a service action project give a couple details for your music. I don’t see a need to include your whole repertoire as AO don’t have time to significantly analyze your list.
A portfolio, assuming you mean recorded performances, will mean much more than a list. Way too many students “learn” advanced pieces by “playing the right notes”. The music faculty that typically listen to a portfolio will know the difference between that and true musicianship.
Presumably an unusual instrument won’t have the equivalent of ABRSM/RCM/Suzuki levels, which would be a good indicator.
I certainly wouldn’t just put an entire repertoire. If you need to list, maybe 2 or 3.
