report successes after graduation here!

I haven’t read this whole thread and I wasn’t on CC when it started. But the very fact that a thread titled “report successes after graduation here” is so long is very encouraging and gives hope to the rest of us! Congratulations musicalmom and congratulations to all! :)

After a VERY long wait after the audition, my son just learned that he will be a swing for Fuerzabruta (Off-Broadway, NYC). He’s thrilled, we’re thrilled. (doing a little dance)

Jasmom, wowee! This has been a long time coming but his time came!! Many congrats!! Enjoy the moment!

WOW! Fuerzabruta is incredible, good for him! Being a swing for any show is crazy, and Fuerzabruta is crazy, so I can only imagine what the two would be like together…!

Thanks, Susan and wb!

How exciting! Congratulations!!!

Fabulous news! Congrats! :)

Thanks, and what fun to have someone to tell in the middle of the night!

Jasmom - Congratulations!!!

Wonderful news! Congrats! :)

This is probably a dumb question but what is a swing in the context of theatre. Why is a swing crazy?

A swing is generally an “understudy” covering multiple ensemble tracks and supporting roles. The swing must learn the different tracks and be prepared to go on for any of those tracks sometimes with very short notice.

Wow, that does sound like lots of work and nerve wracking also . It’s a job in the business though and exciting. Congratulations jasmom.

Thank you so much (and thanks to rossji for starting this thread, I just love hearing good news re: these talented, hardworking young folks).
Apparently, in this show, everyone kind of knows every part. As a parent, of course (after the excitement subsides) I really want to know about health insurance!

Jasmom, the health insurance (if this is Equity, I presume), is a great perk of being Equity. It is wayyyyyyyy cheaper than what we were paying for individual insurance for our daughter prior to the Equity job.

jasmom, bravo to your son! He’s a very talented young man. I remember when you first mentioned the possibility of this show, must be somewhere around a year and a half ago because I thought he’d be hired then due to an injury to an actor who I knew in the cast. Sometimes these things take forever, but hurray that it finally happened!

Thanks for those reassuring and kind words! I think in response to the economy, actors have less frequently moved on. When they have left the show (as was the case at least temporarily for the actor you knew, alwaysamom) I believe the show made do with fewer actors. They’ve been running pretty lean for awhile.
I’m hoping an economic upswing will soon bring more good news for our grads.

An economic upswing would be good, jasmom, I agree. Things are still pretty bad in NYC with thousands at open calls and fewer and fewer positions becoming available due to someone leaving a show. There were 17+ shows this week whose grosses were below 70% which is very very bad for this time of year. Many of the actors I know in the city are fortunate for the tv work they’re getting on L&O and The Good Wife. If anyone is a Good Wife fan, the beautiful and talented Karen Olivo will be on tonight’s episode and will be on for several episodes!

Was she the law student? I didn’t realize that was her!

lynn, yes, I believe so. I Tivo’d it and haven’t watched yet but her H told me that the role she was cast in was, indeed, a law student. :)
