I think he had “a right” to report. A choice. My issue us how this is being presented to us, the ‘reasoning’ and some attitude.
First, I think if this were concern for legal risk to OP, the action could/should have been taken earlier, months ago. In the interim, this “risk” continued. So we ask ourselves how legit the fear of the risk was. Or, what else was in play.
Second, the explanation paints OP as so concerned- about, eg, addiction. Again, then why wait what amounts to 6-7 months?
The consideration of “life changing” should have been part of the original thoughts, either way. Instead, it seems presented after the fact, now that OP is “one of the most hated people on my floor.” If OP felt so certain his actions were correct, imo, so sure this uprightness were the true path, why that concern?
And now that the die is cast, OP would like, it seems, to “help,” seems baffled this kid is ignoring him and his desire to be part of some save, maybe even feel good, generous.
That’s what strikes me as odd, all if it. OP could have spoken in confidence to some rep, maybe a substance counselor, months ago, gotten guidance then.
Changing rooms wouldn’t have been punishment to him. It would have been standing for his stated belief, saying No Mas to what he felt was untenable. Why the hesitation? Really?
