I just started my senior year of HS in CA. I was hoping to be able to report that I'd
gotten to a good level of three languages Spanish, Japanese and Chinese during
high school. I took Spanish AP (got a 5) last year/junior year. I am taking AP Japanese
now. I self studied Chinese during my junior year and got approved by the Chinese teacher
for fourth year honors Chinese. But unfortunately there was a scheduling conflict with
AP Chem senior year and now I can't proceed with that plan.

So instead I am planning to enroll at the local community college in 4th year
Chinese. I am hoping to get some kind of credit for the self study and
making it to this level via self study. What would be the best way to present
this in my UC application? The class will still be in progress in November
but I could show that I am registered. Perhaps just mention it in my Personal
Statement for question "Tell us about a personal quality, talent, accomplishment,
contribution or experience that is important to you."? Thank you.

For foreign languages, UCs consider the highest level completed.

That you are enrolled in a college Chinese course higher than Chinese 1 would speak for itself, if the college’s Chinese instructors place you in that higher level course. Note that college foreign language courses are much more intense than high school foreign language courses, so placement into 4th year high school may be only equivalent to placement into 2nd or 3rd semester college, depending on the high school, college, and language.

@ucbalumnus Thank you. I need to talk with the Professor today to choose 3rd or 4th year. That’s a good heads up on the leveling.

@ucbalumnus I understand that the UC applications are to be submitted in November. How will UC know that I am taking this higher level Chinese course which finishes in early December? Will it just show up in my CC transcript that it’s in progress? I had earlier taken four other CC courses. Or would that be self-reported some how on the application?

For UC frosh applications, all of your past and in-progress high school and college courses are self-reported on the application (with grades for those you have completed). You do not send transcripts at application time. If you are admitted and decide to attend, you send your transcripts then to verify previously self-reported courses and grades, and to verify that you completed self-reported in-progress courses with high enough grades.
