Reporting of High school summer class before 12th grade

Hi. I am aware of the Cal state instructions for reporting a summer class in between 9th and 10th. It says to set the grade level to 10th. This makes sense. But I need information on reporting a summer class taken before 9th and then one taken before 12th. Do you report it the same way - set the grade level to 9th (it would then not be included in the GPA, but you would get an a-g in)? What about the summer class taken before 12th? If I set the grade level to 12th - it will not be in my UC/Cal state gpa, right? I thought anything taken from summer after 9th until summer after 11th counted in the UC/Cal State GPA? But if I put the grade level to 12th that doesn’t make sense. Does anyone know about this. Thank you.

A class taken before the summer before 9th grade is listed as 9th grade and not included in the CSU GPA. A class taken the summer before 12th grade is listed for 12th and included in the CSU GPA. GPA is calculated on a-g courses taken the summer before 10th grade through the summer before 12th grade.

Hi @Gumbymom I understand that anything taken after 11th grade (in summer between 11th and 12th) IS included in the CSU GPA. But for reporting purposes, do you list the class and set the grade level to 12th? How does the CSU app know that it was taken the SUMMER BEFORE 12th - if you are setting the grade level to 12th? I hope you understand what I am saying. If the GPA is through the summer BEFORE 12th and I am setting the grade level to 12th - how does the CSU app undertand this. Could you let me know how it is reported on the actual CSU application? Thanks.

If the work is completed and you report the grade, even if you set the grade to 12th it should show up in the GPA. Other 12th grade work is reported as “planned” or “in progress”. It’s also easy to test the calculated GPA, by not including the summer class and noting the GPA, then adding the class and see if the GPA changes.

Awesome! thank you @svlab112

As @svlab112 explained if you have a grade listed for a 12th grade course at time of application, the grade will be calculated into the CSU GPA calculation. Most applicants will not have 12th grades available to be listed on the CSU application (exceptions some schools do list quarter grades on their transcript) so for the rest of the 12th grade courses they are listed as in-progress or planned. Some CSU’s will ask for 1st semester/1st trimester or Midyear transcripts upon being accepted. Although these grades will not count for the CSU GPA used in their admission decisions, they are used to make sure the applicant is on track to complete their a-g courses by end of Senior year.
