Reputable Music and Business Programs

Hi Everyone,
I'm already looking at CMU, Boston U, American U, and George Washington U.
I'm planning on majoring in business/finance. However, I am also pretty talented musically and would like to go to a school with a reputable music program as well so I can possibly minor in performance. The only school so far that seems to match that description is Carnegie Mellon, which is my reach school. American has a decent music program, however I play saxophone and they have no symphonic band/wind ensemble. Any ideas? Thanks,
Ben

I would look at NYU's Steinhardt and/or Tisch program for music and business. You can even just go for the Stern route through NYU's business program and take music on the side.

Also look at UPenn for business. I hear the music area is gaining a lot of interest among the students, plus the extracurricular opps. for musicians is big there. Try it out.

Northeastern has a music business major if that helps

What are your stats like? It is hard to recommend schools without knowing your stats. There are a three schools that come to mind:

Carnegie Mellon University (top 10 Business School and top 10 Music program)
Indiana University-Bloomington (top 15 Business School and top 5 Music program)
University of Michigan-Ann Arbor (top 5 Business School and top 5 Music program)

I am familiar with Michigan's Music program and I can tell you it is pretty strong...and very selective. Its Saxophone professor, Donald Sinta, is arguably the best Saxophone instructor there is.

I am not sure how possible it is to double major in Music and Business at any of those schools because their music programs are very demanding.

How do you find music rankings? PS: Tepper is top 5, thx :)

Tepper is top 5 indeed. But so are NYU-Stern, UVA-McIntire, UTA-Darden and UNC-Kenan Flagler. I'd say that Tepper is definitely a top 10 BBA program, but not definitely a top 5 BBA program.

Music rankings are hard to come by. The ranking I am using is the one that was done by the USNWR a couple of years ago.

Indiana has both a top 5 music school and a top 10 overall business school. Their finance program is in the top 5.

I'm not sure you can minor in performance without majoring in music. To double major in music and business is nearly impossible as both programs are very demanding.

The funny thing is, you might be better off going to a school that DOESN'T have a top-notch music program. Some top music schools might not provide a lot of access to courses or instruction to students who are enrolled in other units (and they might consider you to be enrolled in a different unit if your major is there, despite wanting to minor in music). It's a question I'd pursue closely, and don't let anyone wave you off with "I'm sure that can all be worked out." Find out for sure, probably by speaking with someone in the music school.
