They say I need to submit more required documents, but all of them are for loans. I don't plan to take any loans. I already sent in all the required documentation for grants.

Do I have to complete the documents for the loans if I don't plan to take any?

My son received some grants, but in order to get the grant we had to take the loans. Read your financial aid packet very carefully. We took the loans, then paid them paid them back within that same school year. It cost a little bit of interest, but it was worth it considering the amount of the grant dollars.

I called the Office of Financial Aid and the lady told me that I was not required to send in the documents for the loans if I wasn’t planning to take them (two of the loans would automatically be added into my account once I sent in the documents). I’m still sort of uneasy about the whole process, but the only two grants I have are the Federal Pell Grant and NJ TAG. If anyone else accepted these grants, do you know if they’re completely separate from Federal Loans or…?

I received those same grants last year (unfortunately, I’m not getting any aid from NJ this year which is ridiculous but I digress). So, as far as I know, the loans Rutgers offered you are NOT tied in with the grants you received. On the Rutgers Award letter, you should see a link to a data change form. Fill this out and change all of the loan award amounts to 0 if you don’t plan on accepting them. This is what your “required documents” page should also say in cases where you don’t want the loan. Re-read that to verify.

@NeedsHelp1212: Thank you very much for the information! I double-checked what it said under the required documents - they tell me to “edit my DCF” if I don’t want to accept the loan, but there are no specific instructions on how to do just that. On the DCF page, it tells me to wait until I receive my term bill to reject/reduce any loans, but that might just be an advisory thing rather than something I have to comply to.

I assume changing the amounts to 0 would nullify them, though, like you said.

Yes, DCF is the data change form and I called last year in regards to the message saying to wait until you receive your term bill to reject any loans. As you assumed, this is just an advisory not a required thing to follow.
