What are the required prerequisites to take in the first two years of college before transferring. I’m a Biology major
Transferring to where?
From Pasadena city college to UCLA or USC. I used assist.org for UCLA but I am still a little lost. And also, do you have to take Math 003 first? Or can you go straight to Math 005? They told me there was no placement test.
Are you not working with a PCC advisor since they are familiar with the transfer pathways to each school? According to Assist.org, you should take Math 31A (Math 5A articulation) instead of the Math 3 courses since there is no articulation between PCC and UCLA. If there is no Math placement test, are you ready to take Calculus at PCC or do you have AP credit?
I looked on IGETC but I can not find Math 31A. I am sorry I am asking these silly questions. And I have not talked with any counselor yet. I have like two months until school starts. I just want to get a head start and understand what my courses need to be.
If you look on assist.org and select PPC to UCLA transfer, Math 31A is listed as a requirement.
Oh I found it. I was looking at the class schedule on the PCC website and I would need to take MATH 007B or MATH 008 or MATH 009 before Math 5A because those are prereqs. So does that mean I take Math 003, then Math 008 (because Math 003 is the prereq for that class), and THEN math 5A and 5B the following semesters?
I have no AP credit either
The Math classes you take depends upon where you place into the PCC Math sequence. What level of Math did you complete in High school? Your goal is to complete Math 5a and 5b before transferring.
They stopped the placement test but I Honors Pre-Calculus was my last math class taken in high school. Does that mean I’d go to 5a from there?
Calculus should be the next step if you completed Honors Pre-Calc and feel confident on handling Calculus I (5A),
Is 5A only one semester? And also on assist.org it mentioned Bio 1A 1B 1C more than a couple times but does that mean I only have to take them all once?
PCC is on a semester system so each class will be a semester. You would take take each class for a semester so the Biology series would be 3 semesters.
Why not read https://www.assist.org/transfer/report/15033671 to see what courses you should take at PCC to transfer to UCLA as a biology major?
That page says that you need:
PCC BIOL 10A, 10B, 10C (= UCLA LIFESCI 7A, 7B, 7C, 23L)
PCC CHEM 1A and 1B (= UCLA CHEM 20A, 20B, 20L, 30AL)
PCC MATH 5A and 5B (= UCLA MATH 31A and 31B)
PCC PHYS 31A and 31B (= UCLA PHYSICS 6A and 6B) or PHYS 1A, 1B, 1C (= UCLA PHYSICS 1A, 1B, 1C, 4AL, 4BL)
PCC CHEM 8A and 8B (= UCLA CHEM 30A and 30B)
UCLA has additional information at http://www.admission.ucla.edu/prospect/Adm_tr/lsmajors/life_sci.htm .
If your last math course was honors precalculus in high school and you did well in it, you should be ready to take calculus (PCC MATH 5A). You can use http://www.math.buffalo.edu/rur/rurci3.cgi to check your knowledge and see if you need to review some topics.
PCC MATH 3 and 8, or PCC MATH 7A and 7B, or PCC MATH 9, are for students who need more than a little review of high school precalculus math before taking PCC MATH 5A.
PCC recommends math placement based on your high school record, as described at https://pasadena.edu/academics/support/counseling/academic-planning/prerequisite-clearance.php . That page also lists a prerequisite challenge process if you believe that the recommended math placement is too low.
