Requirements for HHC for incoming freshman

Are there published requirements for admission (as an incoming freshman) to the Hutton Honors College? I saw something on the website that invitations to HHC were based on a combination of GPA and standardized test scores, but I couldn't find exact GPA/ACT-SAT numbers. If there are stated minimums, is there any flexibility/ability to petition? Thanks.

I am pretty sure I saw somewhere that you need a 31 ACT to get into Huttons, but I may be thinking of something else so don’t quote me on it. But if you were invited you would have received a postcard after being admitted to IU.

Don’t quote me on this, but I’m pretty sure its the same for getting the Selective Scholarship Application- which I’m pretty sure is 31 ACT, 3.8 GPA. It could be slightly higher.

I don’t think that the criteria were spelled out. See post #6 of this link:

I know it is over a 3.8 because I had that and wasn’t admitted

Here is the most recent annual report for HHC. Has averages on page 2 of Fall 2009 incoming class. These are averages only; I don’t think they ever publish minimums.

If you don’t get accepted at admission, apply early in your first Spring semester, after taking 14 credits and getting a 3.7+ gpa in the Fall semester. 254 freshmen got in that way last year, so it is very doable.

The GPA requirement is 3.95 or Top 5% in your class, the SAT requirement is 1340.

As a side note, you can definitely apply for admission and get in as a freshman. I did it with a 3.9 and 30 ACT and I absolutely recommend it. What’s one point on a standardized test have to do with academic ability? I was the only person in my first honors seminar to get an A+ in the class. The opportunities of Hutton are worth the application.

Per the latest annual report, HHC wants to keep the entering freshman class at around 700. So they choose standardized test scores that will keep them at that level. Students within a point or two of whatever the minimum cutoff score is are probably just as qualified, but HHC has to be rigid or risk admitting too many students. It is great that students can earn their way in by having a good Fall semester at IU. Another great benefit is getting more flexibility in scheduling, since honors classes give you more choices. I can’t figure out why so few seniors graduate each year with the honors notation. Only 159 last year. It seems easy to meet the requirements, even if you are in Kelley. About one-third of HHC students are also in Kelley.

It looks like my D is going to fall short on the GPA. She only has a 3.8 (at a HS that doesn’t rank). She’s still a junior, but at this point she won’t be able to pull it up by any meaningful amount. ACT is a 32, although she’ll be taking it again as part of IL standardized testing in April.
