Hello guys, so I got in UCSD for electrical engineering major, however for my second semester senior year i got a D in physics, C in calc AB and 4 B's. so i got rescinded by UCSD. however, i have a very strong arguement and i want to know the chances of my appeal working. my parents divorced when i was a kid and i have been living with my father since then. he single-handedly raised me, and sadly he passed away this february. his death affected my grade a lot and i would like to know if ucsd would take it?

the only one can tell you for sure is the college itself. send them the argument with the death certificate and see what happens. a letter or two from your hs also will help.

yeah i will def send the death certificate. idk about the letters from my hs, is it really necessary? i think the arguement and the certificate is pretty legit already

First - my condolences on the loss of your father.

I would suggest that besides a letter of explanation from you and the death certificate copy - how about a letter or two of support from a close family friend or relative? Someone who can write about how difficult this past year has been for you and how you have been dealing with it and how moving on - how getting a fresh start at college - would be the best thing for you to do. That’s what I would suggest.

my condolences as well.
the letter from hs is just to explain the rules and regulations they have on missing classes and thus the lower grades. there are ppl can take the losses and still work normally in the acadamics, you just have to explain to the college that you have a different take on that loss.

in the mean time don’t forget to get more fa from the college cause your financial support has been changed.

thanks guys

i understand the thing about the letters from hs. but its summer vacation right now and i think ill have trouble getting someone from my hs to write me a letter.

That is definitely worth contacting the college on Monday via phone and then follow-up asap with at least a copy of the death certificate, a letter that explains how his death impacted your grades/study habits, etc (and also how you feel ready NOW to do well in college), and perhaps a letter from a pastor, HS guidance counselor, a therapist, or even a HS coach or someone else in the community that can vouch for you.

School starts soon so I would get this going asap.

I am sorry for your loss.

Why not just go to a CSU? Im sure you could pull better grades there. And when you are applying for a job, what matters most? Seeing a 3.7 GPA from a CSU and and what qualifications and degrees you have?, or seeing a 2.9 GPA from a UC and the same qualifications and degrees? Oh wait, wait, you went to UCSD, your going to get the job.

I’m not trying to be an a-hole, but im just trying to help you out, maybe a UC isn’t the right choice for you. I know many people who had their intimidate family members die, sure they were affected, and sure some nights they didnt even feel like studing, but it wasn’t like that to get a D.

Sorry if i came out like a jerk, but im just trying to give you some advise, people already told you to send in the death certificate, instead of repeating that like the two other people, thought id shine some light on you.

i see your point. i did get in SDSU ans SJSU, but i didnt SIR to either of them so wouldnt it be too late now?

oh and dont worry dude your not being a jerk man i appreciate your comments

Hmm…have you called them? Is it possible for you to visit? I’d be very surprised if this argument doesn’t work…just get the death certificate and the letter you’ve drafted to explain your circumstances and FAX them. Call call call UCSD or VISIT.

Honesty is always the best policy. If UCSD doesn’t work, then you should immediately contact SDSU and SJSU office of admissions.

Btw, SJSU has AMAZING electrical engineering programs. One of the best actually; some even compare it to Berkeley. I know my dad rejected a lot of Berkeley and Stanford apps to Yahoo! and admitted SJSU ones.

Anyways, talk to SJSU adcoms and explain everything on what happened with UCSD.
Good luck, and let me know how it went!

@ kcmofo, Yeah thanks for understanding, i really didnt mean to be a jerk, just wanted you to hear my honest opinion, i usually like hearing another side of a topic, instead of everyone saying the same thing over and over because it sounds better, i wanna know the reality.

-But i think you have a good chance of being able to go back to school. I think that your argument is better than other peoples. Someone else with your grade situation would say that they were pulling a part time job, but the people reviewing it see that and they think there are many other people doing that aswell, and they can get better grades, but your situation, its a rare one, and they might be able to see that it truly did have an impact on you. Im guessing you had good grades in highschool to get in that school, so they should be able to link your grades going down to your explanation.

Btw- I dont go to a UC, how many hours a night would you have to study for your classes? And is it just like your grade goes on the final? If this question is getting out of topic, could you send it to me in a private message, i wanna know. Thanks.

i havent called them yet, and its impossible for me to visit because im on vacation right now in taiwan! but i will call ucsd asap and explain everything. i really hope they see my point and reinstate me! i dont mind going to SJSU, heck i dont even mind going to ohlone, the community college in the city where i live, but my relatives want me to go to a “good schoo” -_-

The point of community college is to start a foundation, and then you transfer to any UC you want. The UC’s give you priority over everyone else if you go to a community college. Wanna know what the great thing about this is. You do your two years at CC, then go to a UC, your degree is from the UC, no one will ever even know that you went to a CC, its nothing to be ashamed of. My uncles cardiovascular surgeon went to a community college for the first two years, look where he got. Its more about what you put into it.

i know man. thats why i dont mind goin to ohlone. but my family is dead against it. goddamn my relatives!

Yeah, just do what you want to, to a certain extent. It is your life, you should shape and mold it the way you want. Many parents try to force their kids into Medical or Law, they get a little disappointed when they find out that their child doesn’t want to, but then they support them the rest of the way.

Put your self in their shoes, if your child was going to college and didn’t know what to major in, you would obviously try to push them towards Med right? But then once the child realizes that that’s not a subject their intrested in, you tend to support them in what ever they want to do.

^Just as an example.

And i know your family is against it, but its not like they wont attend your graduation and be proud of you for doing what you want right? Just tell them that your going to get there through another path which will get you more prepared since you will have a background. A Community college or state college is a perfect start and foundation on towards a university if that’s where you really wanna to go.

I think as far as getting classes at Ohlone, it’ll be pretty difficult. You would have had to register in like May/June and a bunch of people I know didn’t even get the classes they wanted because of budget cut issues. The same probably goes for DeAnza. All the schools that go by semester have already picked their classes.

By the way, my condolences for your loss.

yeahhh i know man, i signed up for ohlone just now. many friends of mine are going to ohlone and they told me the classes are full. IF i do end up going there, ill just pick classes at orientation. i doubt ill have to go there though, cause i think my appeal to UCSD is more than likely to work

Looking at this post, I would think ‘doctor’ is the one who has no business at a UC. There is more ignorance in this post than I’ve ever seen, and that’s ignoring the fact that they can’t produce a coherent sentence.

I can’t imagine UCSD not accepting your appeal, and I’m sure you will do more than well once you get there. You were accepted once, that already proves you have what it takes.

I think you have a good shot at appealing.

It was so hard to get any classes at Ohlone or any Bay Area community college (De Anza, Mission, Foothill, etc) this summer. Even if you are one of the transfer students, I’m sure getting classes during regular school years can be super difficult.

Best of luck with your appeal!

I’m guessing you’re from the Fremont or Newark area since you said you wouldn’t mind going to Ohlone… but if your mind is set on it, I would really recommend you appeal to SD since Ohlone’s classes have been cut so drastically and you will have a very hard time getting classes next quarter (as others have been saying). you deserve to be at SD, or some other school of your choice, it is just very sad what happened to you. I’m really, sincerely sorry and I hope that things work out. best of luck
