Is it worth appealing?

I really wanted to attend UCSD for the fall, but I unfortunately got rejected, am I’m now considering appealing. I know the chances are pretty low, but I would like some advice on if it’s even worth trying at all. I haven’t been able to contact the admissions office about how many points I have just yet, but I have a few things that I could address in my appeal.

I know the requirements for the appeal for UCSD mention “new and compelling information,” or also family and medical situations. My father was diagnosed with cancer, but it was during my senior year, just this past fall. Is it possible that I could mention something about it affecting my essay and how well I wrote them? I’ve heard they just skim the essays for points, but my father’s condition did really affect me negatively during November when I was applying to schools and writing essays.

During my sophomore year I took Music Theory. On my transcript, the first semester appears as a non-weighted, non-college prep course. During the second semester, it’s listed as a college prep course that is also weighted. I will talk to my counselor tomorrow; if the first semester was supposed to be weighted, would this be sufficient for an appeal? It would raise my overall 10-11th grade GPA from a 3.96 to a 3.99.

I also have small leadership positions that I didn’t include in my essay, but I doubt it’s enough to reverse my admission. Suggestions are greatly appreciated. Thanks. :]

If you want to appeal, you can try. The first one probably won't do anything, but the second one is worth a shot if it turns out to be true. Mention whatever you can on your appeal. Remember, you need a groundwork for appeal, but the real magic is when you get letters of recommendation coming everywhere and what not to help you get in.

yeah, and if you really want to go there, it's always worth a shot

question for you guys. if you submit a letter, do you send it in with your appeal letter or do you ask the person to send it in for you?

you know what? you should appeal because you got nothing to lose.
my friend convinced me to appeal to UCLA. xD

I mean even if I don't get in, I still got nothing to lose you know?

So just send in your appeal.

Heh yeah, I'd figured that I would appeal anyways because it's better than nothing, but I want to try and make it as convincing as possible.

ecilart, how many points did you get out of 7535? i'm just curious because i got 7440 (is that close?! haha) and am seriously considering appealing..

I'm not sure yet because I couldn't get a hold of anyone. I think that's pretty close, 95 points away which isn't too bad.

Oh, and I talked to my counselor today, and it isn't supposed to be a weighted class. Can I still use option 1 and my leadership positions? If not, what exactly constitutes compelling information or administrative errors?
