What exactly do they do at these sessions. They say you have to go to it in order to set up your in room connection. I wont get my computer until after this session though, so would I need to come back after my computer or what?

They first give you a talk about illegal downloading, then they tell you services that the computing center offers (like resume paper, color printing, a whole assortment of other stuff I can't remember), and finally you set up your connection. If you're not getting your computer until after the session, I imagine you take your laptop down to the computing center, or if it's a desktop, go down to the computing center and ask that a residential computing coordinator come by and set it up.

you don't really need to go. Just get a connect CD from somebody and install it. then sign up for an account.

Do a lot of people bring there own printer? It would seem like that would make things a lot easier.

if you get your computer after the rescomp session, you can sign up for internet on any computer that's connected to the internet...your roommate for example. you can use the printer that they have in the academic center in each residence hall, saving you ink (although they do charge you for your paper). i would suggest printing long things or lots of pages there...but for quick handouts or short essays or whatever, it's nice to have your own printer. you and roommate can even share one!

btw can you print directly to the academic center printer? or do you need to transfer files onto a CD and go there and print?

you can't print directly to the academic center printer. most people either email their files to themselves or use webfiles. http://webfiles.berkeley.edu/

having my printer last yr was SO convenient. i could finish my papers at 5am, take a quick nap, and then hand it in at lecture; rather than stressing about when the computing center opened (which I think may have been 10am most days, don't remember) and also for little things, it's nice to have your own printer. all the same, i did print once in awhile at the computing center when i had a lot to print.

Do we need to go to a Rescomp every year we move into the dorm? I am a second year, so would I need to go through the entire process again? But I forgot my rescomp ID and password. Can I get a new one? Please answer my question. Thanks.
