Hey all,
I am very interested in doing biomedical and physics research in college. Being that CMC is a liberal arts school and relatively small, are there still numerous solid research opportunities there? I got in, and I love the small class sizes and overall atmosphere, but I can't help shake the feeling that a school like UCLA will give better research opportunities in medicine.
Thanks,
Hahaha

I was told that there was plenty if you were willing to look for them yourselves, but that obviously the extent of pure opportunities would be less compared to a bigger school. However, at other schools it may be harder to get in some of the labs you really like because more popular professors are bound to have many students wanting to join their lab, which could be a lot like at UCLA.

BTW you considering any other schools besides these 2? I got accepted to both and schools like pomona, ucsd, miami's med program, john hopkins, and a few others. I want to see how other ppl are feeling towards their different schools and what they might pick.

I would say CMC has more research positions per capita than UCLA. There are so many positions avaliable (most PAID) that many times profs send out emails advertising them to as many people as they can. Research positions here run the gamut from the reading/neuro lab to a center for genocide and holocaust studies to the government labs. As a science major though, i would say that if you strictly want to do science research UCLA may be your best bet. While there are many oppurtunites through Joint Science, there are probably significantly more at a huge school like UCLA. Come to CMC though, I'm into science and I love it here!

The schools I am considering are-
CMC
UCLA (Regent's Scholarship at Alumni Scholarship)
Wash U. at St. Louis (But money is an issue)
UCSD Med Program (got called for interview, it's this saturday)
Congratulations, prepare4college, those are some GREAT choices!
CMC Soph, yes I'm most interested in doing scientific research (biomedical/physics) but I'm planning on majoring in engineering (I think). As you said p4c, I'm also worried that the competition at UCLA will be much higher for such research positions.
Are the professors at CMC open to students asking them to do research under their guidance? OR is there a strict application process?
Thanks,
hahaha

The CMC profs are FANTASTIC about students wanting to get involved in research. The profs are the absolute best thing about CMC...I can't say enough about how consistently great they are, and how much they TRULY want you to succeed in life. In fact, just recently a prof emailed me and some other students to ASK if we would be interested in taking part in some research. It's THAT easy. Of course there is an application process, but its not particularly hard, and basically anyone who goes to CMC is qualified enough already for most positions. Additionally, the school has a good amount of money alloted to grants for students who wish to do their own research, work in another country for the summer, or do community service. I was just awarded a summer grant so that I can work this summer at a non-profit organization that wouldn't be able to pay me...instead, the school will pay me for my time. It's fantastic.

SOPH, what organization are you working at this summer? just curious!
