Research Science Institute 2006

Hi pyroman!

How long did you guys work on your essays?

A long time.

When did you ask teachers for recs?

Yeah... a long time, but definitely worth the time, effort, blood, sweat, and tears.

I asked for teacher recs as soon as I got the application- it can't hurt to ask your teachers as soon as possible. (Remember that your teachers may be working on college recs for seniors.)

Do you think there will be an RSI at Caltech this year?

Nope, only MIT. Caltech wasn't willing to invest what the CEE deemed an adequate amount.

"Yeah... a long time, but definitely worth the time, effort, blood, sweat, and tears. "

Ironically, applying to RSI invovled all five of those for me...

zogoto - blood? Did you get a paper cut or something? =P

About recs... should I ask a freshman year honors teacher who would write an awesome rec or a junior year AP teacher who may have more credibility? My junior year teachers don't know me very well aside from my performance on tests and labs and participation and stuff. My frosh teachers could write much more personalized recs and could portray me as an actual person.

I'm thinking of asking one frosh and one junior teacher. Does that sound about right?

lol what about soph teachers?

i was lucky i had the same teacher for frosh honors and junior ap

I wasn't the greatest student last year. My sophomore teachers hated me hehe. I stopped trying in physics and my teacher tried calling my parents. My math teacher hated me because I ate in her class and didn't always show all my work on homework. My computer science wasn't too fond of me because I always played Minesweeper and Hearts in his class... though he gave me a dollar one time because I wrote a program faster than his :P.

I submitted an extra paper to them, and I realized that I stapled it without the title page, so I wanted to take the staple out and not have to print the thing again, but in the scuffle, I cut myself slightly, and got some blood on the paper, so I had to reprint anyway.

theoneo, if that's the case, go only with frosh and junior - it shouldn't be a problem. Go with whatever teachers you think would write the best recs for you.

Thanks, zogoto.

AHH I'm so excited! I decided on my frosh bio honors teacher and junior year AP calc teacher (I'm applying for bio).

Ahh now I have to suck up like crazy in calc until December...

Are recommendations really important? What if I have really good essays but average rec's?

Guys i was just wonderin when the deadline is possibly going to be, because im taking the SAT on december 3rd, and i think that im going to do much better on that than i will on the psat so i would rather like to sumbit that score. Do you think it would be possible?

Dec. 3rd should be alright. I think the deadline is Feb. 1, so you should have scores by then.

I have a very low PSAT(about 205) and have no AP scores. I'm now taking a chemistry class at junior college that's considered AP chem. in most colleges. The others AP's I'm taking are environmental science, cal ab, apush, and stat. I've been in America for only about 1 year so far and I went to another high school last year so I don't know if I can get good rec. by Feb ?? Those teachers in my school barely know me. Should I ask my former teachers in Taiwan to write rec. for me?
Do I still have chance to get in? I feel so bad right now. I have no AP score and I went to a really bad high school in LA so I didn't take good classes either. So far my English is kind of poor and my SAT scores are bad (SAT II Math II 760, PSAT205)
I really love science especially bio and I was preparing to compete in international bio olympiad when I was in Taiwan. But then I came to America and everything became really bad. My English is poor so my SAT's are low and then I can't compete in international bio olympiad anymore( need to be a citizen or stay in america for 4 years or more)
anyway...do you guys think I still have a chance to get in or should I just never bother to apply....

i dont know how much reccs matter cause one of mine sucked so much, i found out later that my bio teacher despised me when he started insulting me in the middle of class

umm i think you should apply, they might take you if you demonstrate insane love of science

I think you should apply. If you don't, you won't have any chance of getting in. Explaining your situation may help your case as well.

Could you take a look at my stuff and tell me how to improve?

9th:
AP Stats = 4

10th:

AP Calculus BC(Self-study) = 5
AP Computer Science AB = 5
AP Physics B = 5

SAT Dec 2004 = 1410

I am entering Siemens Westinghouse this year with a project in Computer Science/Artificial Intelligence. I am not sure about making semifinalist status(the project was entirely self-concieved and done, so it isn't as good as if I had a uni mentor).

I'm taking the PSAT(haven't studied much, because I've been exhausted from Siemens and classes), and I'm thinking 2100+.

I live in NC, and go to NCSSM(North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics).

I did a research intern at UNC-Charlotte in Computer Graphic dept over the summer.

I'm looking into getting a research intern at DUKE.

My classes this trimester are:

AP Physics C
AP Chem
AP US Hist
AP Eng. Lang
Intro Spanish(am not strong enough to take AP French[took french III] last year)

and most likely Diff Equations from EPGY, Multi in winter and spring trimesters for sure.

I like doing research in Computer Science, but I'm not very great at math competitions, and I do USACO, but I didn't do to well last year(practiced a lot over the summer).

PS: Can we talk about independent projects, like chess engine i built, graphing calculator applet, etc?

nope, rsi has a strict policy against individuality.

^makes me wonder what it would be like without this thread
