Research Science Institute (RSI) 2014

@mayee
yup

@LuoSciOly
Thank you so much! I feel a lot more reassured now.
Fellow applicants: how long is your essay answer for #3 (the research one)? And are your essays really factual? My essay answer is so stiff and so full of facts that I cry when I reread it :(

@academicnut

My #3 right under a page and a half (12pt TNR, 1.5 spaced); I may shorten it later. I don’t think length really matters, as long as you get your point across.

For your second question, what do you mean by “factual”? If you mean ‘centered around concrete achievements and accolades’, then some of my essays are factual, but most are a mix of facts and brief discussion. While I don’t know the “correct” way to go about all this, I do remember reading that the admissions committee is looking for passion and genuine interest.

Also, to anyone: are there any formatting restrictions besides having to use 12pt. Times New Roman?

@SJSF01
Ahh sorry I meant to say if your essay answer for #3 was factual! My other essays are fine :slight_smile: sorry for the the confusion!
As for the formatting restrictions, it says on the app that the essays have to be single-spaced. Hope that helps!

@academicnut

Thanks for the help :slight_smile: . I just edited my essay #3 some more, and it is around 3/4 page single-spaced. My #3 wasn’t actually all that factual, i.e. I didn’t really include much about my awards/achievements. I pretty much just stated the problems, why they interest me, and some steps that I have taken/want to take in the future.

Happy New Year’s Eve guys.

@bill2507733: Sounds fine to me, but use your best judgment.
@mayee107: Yes, that sounds fine to me.

Happy New Year!

Happy New Year guys.

How long is your first essay? “In each Research Field selected in Question 2, please state what you perceive as the one or two most interesting questions/ problems in this field. Explain why they interest you.”

Mine is half a page, and I was wondernig if it is better to be brief or detailed.

Also, if the essays are supposed to be “1 to 2 paragraphs per question” then how many words are you writing for question 3? “What extracurricular activities and/or hobbies demonstrate your interest and ability to undertake scientific or mathematical research? (Give some measure to the extent of your participation and/or accomplishments in math or science competitions, research internships, and awards received.)”

Hey guys for the RSI questions document do we have to include the questions and answers in the 3-page document, or can we just include the question number and then state the response? Thanks.

Hey guys,

How serious are they about this 1-2 paragraph thing? My essays #3 and #5 both have short 3rd paragraphs that get some good points across. Also, I talk about 3 projects in essay #7, so I have 3 two/three sentence paragraphs. Will this be okay? If it’s not, any suggestions are much appreciated.

Happy New Year.

Should I just self-report AP scores in the essays or do I need to send an official copy? If I need an official report, how do I get one? All I see is the “unofficial” score report in PDF form; is that enough?

Happy New Year!

Hold on a sec. You guys are reporting your AP scores? I thought that RSI admissions didn’t care to see them, since there wasn’t a place to enter them in the form.

@starchow

The application form mentions that we can send AP scores if we want; however, these scores aren’t mandatory to send.

@Renasani

I don’t really know the answer to that, but I would try asking your counselor either via email or once you get back from break. Your school should have the official reports. If this doesn’t work out, I guess it wouldn’t hurt to send the unofficial copy.

Hey guys,

If I completed the honors version of a class and am currently in its AP version, would I check both boxes and include two completion dates, or just check the AP box (or does it not matter)?

Does anyone have suggestions as to how to send official (or certified) psat and sat scores to RSI? Thanks!

re: score reports

The directions on the RSI application read as follows: “Please include an unofficial score report with your application and have your school send certified test scores with your transcript.”

When I applied, I sent (in the same envelope as the rest of my application) a photocopy of each of my own score reports. Additionally, I asked the transcript person at my school to include an identical copy of each score report in the official sealed envelope with my transcript. My school does not provide truly “official” score reports on paper, so putting a photocopy in the sealed envelope was the closest I could get. If your school has a more “official” mechanism of transmitting scores on paper, that would probably be better.

Did any one find out from RSI office about the question #9. Can we include it as a separate 1-2 pages without including it with the questions from 3 to 8?

@besthope11
I believe that the accomplishment list is separate and is not included in the 3-page limit.

Do two of our recommendations have to be from high school teachers? Is it okay if I send one from a high school teacher and the other(s) from a research professor(s)?

They will take up to three:

Part III: Two teacher recommendations (math/science) in sealed envelopes. The teachers should be familiar with the applicant and the applicant’s scholastic record. Applicants who have participated in a research project of 4 weeks or longer at a university or a laboratory should request a recommendation from the research supervisor. CEE will accept a maximum of 3 recommendations letters.

I’m sending in three, two from teachers and one from my research mentor.

I dunno if this has already been mentioned but are we allowed to super score our PSAT scores?
