How many credits of classes do you usually take along with research? How long are you in the labs whilst doing research?

Would micro machining of polymer based materials be helpful for a BME major? Especially if I want to do Nanotechnology in the future?

Also, what year should everyone start doing research? I'm going to be a sophomore.

If you want to go to grad school, especially a Ph.D. program, any kind of research remotely related to your field will be very useful for you. The other questions really depend on the professor’s expectations of you, what the research involves, etc. The one I’m working with says he sets a minimum of about 10 hours a week when it’s needed for undergraduates working with him. I say “when it’s needed” because a lot of times there just wouldn’t be anything for me to do if I went in to the lab.
