So I've been trying to read up on my options for next year. I'm an entering sophomore transfer student (CAS) and my acceptance package lists the following residence options for me next year:
Lafayette Street Residence
Twenty-sixth Street Residence
University Court
Second Street Residence
Greenwich Hotel

I'm not spoiled -- I'm generally looking for a nice suite with a kitchenette and some personal space. My own bedroom would be ideal and a nice neighborhood is a giant plus, but I'm also not looking to spend too much.
So I guess what I'm asking people here is: what's the consensus about the options I listed above? What do you guys recommend?

Edit: another google search leads me to believe that 26th and Lafayette are not so appealing because of their size and far location. 2nd is alright, greenwich is the golden boy and I couldn't really find anything on Uni Court. Any truth behind any of this?

Go with Lafayette. As a transfer I looked at all of them as well. I had Greenwich as my first choice and Lafayette as my second. After the past year I really miss it. I believe that 26th and U-court are being turned into med student dorms but don’t quote me on that. Regardless, they should be the bottom of your list.

Greenwich doesn’t have a subway nearby so your only transportation is either walking or bus and I hear that the rooms are okay but not a lot of stuff happens there since it’s kind of secluded from the other dorms.

I’ve honestly heard very little about second street.

At first when I received Lafayette I had heard about how Lafayette is too far, but it really isn’t that bad. There’s the nyu bus which makes frequent stops and both the 6 and NQRW subway lines nearby. The rooms are huge unless you get stuck in one of the corner rooms, but either way they are bigger than any of the dorms. For me I had a 2 bedroom 2 bath with a kitchen/common area for 4 people. After moving out I really wish I could stay at Lafayette again.

Thanks a lot for the response AoDay. Can you tell me more about the resident community experience? Are most residents undergrads? Are there activities? What about the neighborhood?

All of the dorms are undergrads. I believe grad students have their own halls near campus. If you are into greek life, it is all in Lafayette on the top 2 floors. All halls have their own flyers for events and community activities. There are also optional floor gatherings each week etc. The neighborhood is a pretty big turn off especially at first but you learn to live with it. There is a homeless shelter on the opposite side of the block, and a jail about 2 blocks away. Although it has a tribeca postal code it’s like right inbetween tribeca and chinatown. 2 blocks south of Laf is where all the federal buildings are. There are a few nearby parks and tons of cheap restaurants. There are tons of tourists along canal street which has the subway lines especially during weekends.

Ok, if they are all undergrad I guess it’ll be convenient to make friends. Sounds like a nice residence hall, definitely better than some of the other options, but I’m still a little turned off by the distance and surroundings but you can’t be too choosy I guess.

What’s the policy with guests? I have a girlfriend and was wondering if she could stay over at my place some nights?

Although I am not sure how heavily enforced these are. Make sure you make friends with the guards it makes things a lot easier when you forget your id or are walking in and out a lot with guests.

yeah i’d like to know if anyone has anymore information too… i’m actually gonna be in the accelerated nursing program in the fall (since i’ve already earned a bachelor’s degree from another school). since i’m moving from texas, i think that living on campus is a better option for me. my housing application lists: greenwich hotel, carlyle court, 2nd street, and lafayette as options for transfer students. does anyone have any experience with carlyle?

Never been in the rooms but the location is great and the building doesn’t look that bad. I’m surprised you have carlyle as an option I think it’s usually one of the top picks since it’s in union square.
