Residence Halls

Does anyone know when Stanford opens it residence dorms and halls? Thanks ahead of time.

If you mean when we can move in, it’s the first day of new student orientation: September 15th.

Well, the dorms open on the 11th of September.

What do kids doing international student orientation do? Do we get our actual dorms a couple days early? And what about athletes doing pre-season and stuff?

Dorms open before NSO for ISO.

ISO kids learn about stuff you should know before you live in a new country: laws, simple customs, etc. I don’t know exactly since I’m not an international student, but I think they briefly discuss it in Approaching Stanford. Athletes in pre-season are living in other dorms that aren’t their freshman dorm.

So does that mean that the international students get to move in earlier? Also, does anyone have any idea when the registration for international new student orientation is?

Yes, they have to move in early. It should say in Approaching Stanford, I’m guessing September 11th/12th if NSO is the 15th.

Well on the inside back cover of the Approaching Stanford it says “Students who register for International New Student Orientation should plan to arrive on campus by 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 12.”

I’m not 100% sure if that means that we can move in by then. Also, I haven’t received anything concerning registering for the International New Student Orientation.

Please note that there will no orientation assistance available until Saturday, September 12th and dorms will not be available until the 12th. There are no exceptions to this.

Every International should have seen this by now!

I know the dorms for upperclassmen open on the 11th (for SOCO participants, NSO volunteers, etc.).

You’re moving in when you arrive for orientation. It’s going to be a little desolate at first but they aren’t gonna just leave you stranded until the fifteenth haha…

Thanks, geeknerd! I have no idea what happened but they never sent me any international student stuff. It’s all up on the website, but I hadn’t seen that document.

Are those the only events for International Orientation? What are we doing from the 12th until the 15th?

My understanding is that ISO is just a mini NSO: you’ll get a booklet with planned events (presumably with other internationals), etc. The staff will be there in your dorm, as well, and they’ll probably have stuff planned for you.

Even if there isn’t a lot planned, there’s so much for a (very fresh) freshman to do–explore the campus, meet with staff/profs if you can, check out Stanford’s resources, plan courses, meet with your adviser, etc. Believe me, a week-long NSO wasn’t enough for me freshman year to do all that (there’s just so much), so you won’t be bored.

bluebubbles I did not receive anything either! I checked and rechecked all of my e-mails from Stanford and there’s absolutely nothing concerning ISO there! And it’s so scary because the deadline to submit the form is August 1st! (Geeknerd I think you posted the wrong link because that one goes to the ISO for graduate students but the link for the undergrads was in the pdf)

"Q: Will I be receiving further information on orientation, housing etc.?

A: You should have received information on housing and health insurance. The Bechtel International Center does not mail this information. You will need to contact Graduate Admissions. The Bechtel International Center will send (in late June - early July) a “Welcome Letter” via e-mail to all admitted international graduate students. This letter will also be available on our web page. In July a message is emailed to all admitted international undergraduate students. This letter will contain further information on our orientation program."

It’s either they’re waiting to send that e-mail on the last day of July or there’s some glitch and it hasn’t been sent because there aren’t that many international students to send the e-mail to…

Yeah I posted the wrong link. Lol.
The various ISO links (including the form) are at [Bechtel International Center - Welcome](http://icenter.stanford.edu/students/new/orientation.html).

The only disturbing thing about the ISO registration is that it asks for a flight number, which will be a problem if you haven’t decided on a ticket yet.

Yea it is. Thankfully I got my ticket already. I got a pretty good deal from American Airlines. But in order to get it at that price we had to purchase the ticket online. When we went into one of their branches the same flight was >US$100 above the price for the same flight online.

I e-mailed John Pearson today and it would seem as though there’s some sort of glitch in the system. Apparently they’ve sent the e-mail twice and students still aren’t getting it. He e-mailed mine directly and it was dated since June 19th. Hopefully the issue is resolved because there are probably other internationals who haven’t received theirs either and are none the wiser as to the online forms or the deadline.

Sorry to post one after the other like this but does anyone know when we’ll be notified of our dorm assignments?
